VILLANOVA, Pa. - The Villanova University volleyball team (13-7, 5-2 BIG EAST) knew coming into today (Oct. 13) that they needed a big win to keep their postseason dreams alive. Despite giving up over 10 spots in the most recent RPI poll to the visiting University of Cincinnati (14-6, 5-2 BIG EAST) the Wildcats were undeterred as they beat the Bearcats 3-2 (30-23, 14-30, 30-27, 24-30, 15-12).
The Wildcats came out strong in game number one handing the Bearcats a 30-23 victory. It looked as if VU would be able to sweep right through UC but in game two the Bearcats showed their power as they gave VU a 30-14 loss. This game was one of the lowest scoring games for the Wildcats all year but they would come back to take a 2-1 lead in the third game with a 30-27 victory.
Down by a game Cincinnati once again came out firing and jumped out to a big lead but with the game on the line down 19-29 the Wildcats ripped off five straight points to give them some momentum going into the fifth and deciding game.
The fifth game was back-and-forth with VU getting a slight advantage late. Senior Alona Cherkez sent home the last point of the day capping off her 30 kill performance.
Cherkez led the way for the Wildcats with 30 kills and eight digs with five assists. Senior Kacy Sellers chipped in 16 kills along with a team leading nine blocks. Junior Dana Tartazky was the final Wildcat with double-digit kills with her 12.
The Wildcats will next be in action tomorrow, October 14 at 2 p.m. as they host the University of Louisville.
