WASHINGTON, D.C. - A balanced offensive performance and excellent blocking led Villanova (8-10, 3-2 BIG EAST) to its third straight win as the Wildcats defeated Georgetown (6-12, 0-5 BIG EAST), 3-1, at McDonough Arena on Saturday afternoon. Villanova won the match by scores of 25-19, 18-25, 25-20 and 25-18 to earn their first true road win of the season.
"It is never easy to get wins on the road so I am glad we are heading home with a win after a well-played match," Wildcats head coach Josh Steinbach said. "We did a good job of transferring things from practice this week into the match and that was also a positive."
Senior outside hitter Krista Andersen (Lakeland, Fla.) had a match-high 13 kills to lead Villanova, which had its top four hitters all register nine or more kills. Andersen committed only five hitting errors while hitting .258 for the match and she and senior middle blocker CeCe Twitty (Scottsdale, Ariz.) each had four kills in the fourth set when the Wildcats closed out the match.
"Krista played very well today," Steinbach said. "The keys for us were the way Krista played and also our serving. I thought we served very tough throughout the match."
Villanova had seven aces in the match, with freshman setter Emma Pettit (Ft. Collins, Colo.) serving three aces. Sophomore setter Allie DiBernardo (Coto de Caza, Calif.) and sophomore defensive specialist Ally Moskitis (Long Beach, Calif.) had two aces apiece.
The scores of the first and third sets were close throughout but the Wildcats never trailed in either set along the way to taking leads of 1-0 and 2-1 in the match. Villanova pulled away from an 18-18 tie in the opening set with a 7-1 run to close out the set, including aces by Pettit and DiBernardo in that stretch. DiBernardo served an ace for set point.
In the third set the Wildcats never relinquished an early 2-1 lead and once again pulled away late. After an 11-6 lead for Villanova was trimmed to one point at 17-16 the Wildcats won eight of the next 12 points to close out the set with a 2-1 lead.
Another big run finished off the match in the fourth set, as the Wildcats pulled away from a 13-13 tie with a 12-5 run to take the set by a seven-point margin. Five different players had kills for Villanova in the run to end the match, including two apiece by Twitty and freshman middle blocker Gabby Pethokoukis (Western Springs, Ill.).
The trio of Twitty, Pethokoukis and freshman outside hitter Lauren Carpenter (Lakewood, Colo.) had nine kills apiece for the Wildcats and Pethokoukis had a team-high seven block assists. Villanova had 14.0 total team blocks to match a season high.
Pettit finished the match with 39 assists, eight digs, three aces and three total blocks and junior libero Mariah Henley (Hockessin, Del.) led the Wildcats defense with 19 digs. DiBernardo had 12 digs.
Villanova has a midweek home match coming up next and the team will host Lehigh on Tuesday night at 7 p.m.
