Villanova, Pa. – Allie Loitz (Bonita, Calif.) finishes with 18 kills on a .455 hitting percentage as Villanova defeated Butler 3-0 (25-13, 25-23, 25-19) on Saturday afternoon.

Set 1:

Villanova started out with a quick 3-0 lead behind kills from Allie Loitz and Darcy Wolf (Allentown, Pa.). Butler responded back with three straight points, but another Loitz kill and a Regan Lough (Riverside, Calif.) service ace gave the Wildcats a 6-4 lead. The Bulldogs scored next, but Villanova took five of the next six points forcing a Butler timeout at 11-6 Wildcats. The two teams traded points to a 13-9 score, then Villanova scored three straight on a kill and service ace from Loitz to take a 16-9 lead. Butler narrowed the lead to 18-12, but Villanova continued to keep the pressure on them with five straight points to take a 23-12 lead. The Bulldogs scored once more before Villanova closed out the set 25-13.




Set 2:

The second set was back and forth to start, with teams trading points to a 4-4 tie. Back to back kills from Loitz and Amanda Pedersen-Henry (Murrieta, Calif.) gave the Wildcats a 6-4 lead,  then Villanova went on a 5-2 scoring run to take an 11-6 lead behind two consecutive service aces from Ashley Knight. After trading points, Butler responded by going on a 5-2 run of their own to bring the score to 14-12. Villanova scored back to back points on two Bulldogs errors, and then the teams traded scores again to a 21-16 Villanova lead. Butler was then able to rattle off five straight points to tie the score at 21 all. Villanova scored two consecutive points to force a late timeout by Butler at 23-21 and came out of the timeout two score two straight points to tie the match at 23-23. The Wildcats were able to pull off the close set win after a kill from Pedersen-Henry and a Butler error to win 25-23.


Set 3:

Butler scored first in the third set, but Villanova ripped off four straight points on two kills from Loitz. Butler responded with three straight points, followed by three points from Villanova, followed by another three points from Butler to bring the third set to a 7-7 tie. The Bulldogs took three of the next five points to take a 10-9 lead, but the Wildcats responded with a 4-1 scoring run on two kills from Mallory Potts to take 13-11 lead. Both teams went back and forth to a 15-14 Villanova lead, then the Wildcats took three of the next five points to put the score at 18-16. Both teams scored twice in a row, then it was all Villanova from there. They closed out the set on a 5-1 scoring run to win the set 25-19.


Head Coach Josh Steinbach stated this after the win, “It’s good to get a sweep on the weekend. I thought we played pretty well and Loitz and Potts were dominant offensively today.”
