VILLANOVA, Pa. - The No. 21 ranked team in the nation, St. John's University (17-2, 2-0 BIG EAST), handed the Wildcats of Villanova University (9-5, 1-1 BIG EAST) their first BIG EAST loss of the season, 3-0 (30-23, 30-26, 30-28). VU hung with the Red Storm throughout the match and had numerous leads but they were unable to snap STJ's 24-game win streak.
"St. John's played really well today," said head coach Josh Steinbach. "They were extremely efficient and unfortunately for us some of our best players didn't play their best games. The team as a whole played super hard and I think we grew as a team today and we look forward to the chance to play St. John's again."
Senior's Alona Cherkez and Kacy Sellers once again paced the offense despite putting up weaker numbers than usual. Cherkez had 16 kills with six digs and three blocks while Sellers had 14 kills with six blocks.
St. John's was led by Hui Ping Huang and Valeria Kovaleva who each had 12 kills.
Villanova's next contest will be Wednesday, September 26 at 7 p.m. as they host Pennsylvania.
