Wildcats Roll in BIG EAST Opener

Villanova, PA - The Villanova Wildcats extended their win streak to five matches after completing a three game sweep of the DePaul Blue Demons. With the win, the Wildcats improve to 6-8 on the year and 1-0 in the BIG EAST, while DePaul falls to 4-11 overall and 0-1 in the BIG EAST. Senior Adrian Semrau also joined the 1,000 kill club with a kill in the third game, and ended the match with 11, giving her 1,002 for her career at Villanova. The Wildcats were able to jump out to early leads in each of the three games, but none bigger than the third game. In the third game, senior Jenna Link led off the game serving for Villanova. When she was done serving, the Wildcats had built an 18-1 lead. During the run, Alona Cherkez recorded five kills and Link provided three service aces. The 'Cats would go on to win the game by a score of 30-9. In the first game, Villanova jumped out to a 15-4 lead and never looked back, winning 30-16. The second game started out the same way the first did, with the 'Cats gaining the early advantage. The would hold the sizable advatage late in the game, leading 28-19. However, the Blue Demons came storming back to get within one at 29-28. But a kill by Cherkez closed out the game. As a team, the Wildcats hit .432 while DePaul managed just .045. Villanova also dominated in the blocks category, winning that battle 9-2, with Kacy Sellers picking up six and Cherkez getting five. Villanova will jump right back into BIG EAST action on Sunday afternoon, hosting Notre Dame. The match is scheduled to start at 2:00 PM.
