Villanova Registers First Home Win, Downs UMBC 3-1

VILLANOVA, PA. - Kerri Sullivan continued her solid tournament play as Villanova defeated UMBC, 3-1, in the team's final match of the Wildcat Classic on Saturday afternoon at Jake Nevin Field House. Despite the loss, UMBC still captured the tournament championship by virtue of head-to-head matches.
UMBC took the opening game, 30-28, despite five kills from Villanova's Katie Lanting. Amy Starosta led the Retrievers (7-6) with solid blocking and timely attacks in the opener.
Villanova (3-9) led throughout all of game three, with UMBC only getting close at 10-8. Then Celine Nguyen, Dana Kabashima and Hoover stepped up for the 'Cats and put the game out of reach at 25-18 before going on to the 30-22 win.
In game four, Lanting and Nguyen handled the offensive attack, pushing Villanova to leads of 8-2 and 20-13. The 'Cats won the game, 30-20, to seal the match victory.
Sullivan earned All-Tournament honors after leading the 'Cats with 26 kills and six block assists. Lanting chipped in with 14 kills, while Nguyen worked hard on defense, notching 21 digs to go along with seven kills. The Wildcats as a team hit. 239 and finished with 10 total team blocks.
For UMBC, Jocelyn Teoh finished with 18 kills and 17 digs.
Villanova takes the week off before opening Big East play at No. 18 Notre Dame on Friday.
