Villanova Defeated 3-0 by Western Kentucky

WASHINGTON, D.C. - After a grueling five-set match against Missouri, the Villanova Volleyball team (8-5) had a quick turnaround to face Western Kentucky in the final match of the American Volleyball Classic where Wildcats were swept 3-0 (20-25, 15-25, 26-28).
After consecutive errors by the Hilltoppers, Villanova trailed just three points, 13-10, and had closed the gap to two points after Andersen connected on a kill. The Wildcats called timeout after two errors had them trailing 19-14. Western Kentucky played for set point, 24-18, but a kill from sophomore Carly Edwards kept the match going. The Hilltoppers nailed a final kill to win the set, 25-20.
In the second frame, Western Kentucky jumped out to a 9-3 lead and sent Villanova into a quick timeout. The Wildcats could not score a point out of the break and used its final timeout trailing 12-3. Mergen and Andersen each found the floor, but the Hilltoppers still lead 18-8 after a Villanova error and won the set, 25-15.
Maroon served consecutive aces in the third set and Villanova took a 7-3 lead. Western Kentucky mounted a comeback and tied the set at 9-9 after a 6-2 run. The Hilltoppers offense exploded and Villanova called a timeout trailing 14-11. Junior CeCe Twitty came out of the break to record a kill and an ace from Maroon had Villanova within a point, 15-14. Petkovich slammed a kill to tie the set at 18, but after consecutive errors the Wildcats trailed 22-20 heading into their final timeout. Andersen served three points to give Villanova set point, 24-23, but the Hilltoppers tied at 24. Mergen found the floor for a kill at 25-24, but again, Western Kentucky came back to tie. With the set tied at 26 apiece, Villanova hit consecutive errors and the Hilltoppers closed out the match with a sweep.
Following her performance at the American Classic where she averaged 7.09 digs per set, Maroon as named to the All-Tournament team.
Villanova will open the BIG EAST conference season next weekend with a trip to DePaul at Notre Dame. The Wildcats take on DePaul, Saturday, Sept. 24 at 3:00 ET before facing the Irish on Sunday, Sept. 25 at 1:00 p.m. ET. Sunday's match will be broadcast live on ESPNU.
