Wildcats Riding Three Match Winning Streak after Shutting out New Hampshire
Sept. 14, 2013
COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Villanova volleyball squad recorded its third consecutive victory of the season Saturday after the Wildcats shutout New Hampshire, 3-0 (25-19, 25-20, 25-19), at the Comcast Pavilion in day two of the Maryland Invitational.
Villanova improves to .500 (4-4) for the first time since defeating Oakland, 3-1, in the second match of the season. The Wildcats have now beaten New Hampshire (5-5) in consecutive years after a, 3-2, victory last season at the Jake Nevin Field House.
"Well played match for us today," Villanova head coach Josh Steinbach said. "Our middles really set the tone and opened things up for Claire Crutchfield and Lauren Carpenter to score. Emma Pettit did a nice job of spreading the offense around which led us to our best offensive performance so far."
The Wildcats asserted an impressive offensive performance today led by their underclassmen. Carpenter and Crutchfield led all scorers with 11 kills each, both tuning-in .260 plus attack percentages. Freshman Michaela Berendt has played like a veteran throughout the season, adding nine kills on 18 attacks (.444 pct.) and only one error. Brittany Rembert added six kills on nine hits (.667 pct.).
Pettit was the leader passer for Villanova, accumulating 34 assists to go along with her seven digs. Senior Mariah Henley showed why she's a three year starter and finished with a game-high 18 digs and three service aces.
With the first set tied at 14, Villanova went on the attack and finished on an 11-5 run to close out the game, 25-19. Set two went back-and-forth throughout the game until a couple of New Hampshire errors countered by Crutchfield attacks pulled the Wildcats away with a, 25-20, victory.
Up two games to none, Villanova would impose their will in the last set to close the match with a 25-19 third set victory.
Villanova will return to action later tonight for a 7 p.m. showdown with host Maryland (6-1) to determine the tournament's winner.
The Wildcats will host the "Jam for Jake" event Tuesday at 7 p.m. when Delaware comes to the Jake Nevin Field House for the Villanova home opener. The Men's Basketball team will be in attendance to sign autographs for fans and free t-shirts will be distributed along with other promotional items for the first 250 attendees.
