VILLANOVA, Pa. - The Villanova University volleyball team (7-3) was not the gracious host that Binghamton University (6-7) and Liberty University (6-5) had hoped for as the Wildcats swept BU before taking Liberty out in four games. Senior Alona Cherkez recorded a double-double as well as a 27 kills, four blocks performance.
The Wildcats opened up action at 3 p.m. as they took on Binghamton University and the Bearcats found themselves down 3-0 before they could blink as VU handed them a 30-19, 30-20, 30-18 dismantling in less than two hours.
Cherkez recorded a double-double in the match getting 15 kills and 12 digs while junior Dana Tartazky fell just shy of a double-double with 12 kills and nine digs. Senior Kacy Sellers was right in the mix as she recorded 14 kills with five blocks.
Junior Emily Brown led the team with 16 digs while junior Kaela Frizzell filled in at setter as Chelsea Graman took a match to rest. Frizzell had 43 assists in the match with a team-high three service aces.
In match number two it was a much different scenario as Villanova found themselves trailing after game number one. Liberty was able to jump out early on the Wildcats and give them a 30-20 defeat in game one. VU would not be denied as they came back swinging in games two, three and four. VU won with three straight victories 30-26, 30-22 and 30-24.
Cherkez and Sellers showed their true offensive power as they each recorded over 20 kills with Cherkez getting 27 and Sellers firing off 25. Graman returned to notch 53 assists while Brown continued her tremendous defense while digging out 28 balls.
Villanova will return to action tomorrow as they take on Princeton University at 3 p.m. before taking on the College of William & Mary at 7:30 p.m.
