CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - The Villanova volleyball team opened the Holiday Inn Emerald Beach Islanders Classic by extending its win-streak to five matches with a 3-0 (25-21, 25-12, 25-18) sweep over Houston Baptist on Friday evening.

Redshirt sophomore Morgan Petkovich connected for 11 kills, while junior Maggie Mergen posted 10 kills with a .474 clip.

Playing in front of her hometown, junior Courtney Oertli dished out 33 assists to her teammates.

Classmate Kim Maroon collected 14 digs and freshman Mariah Henley posted 10.

Villanova won the first set 25-21 and defeated Houston Baptist easily in the second frame, 25-12.

In the third set both teams traded points early on with the Wildcats taking a quick 6-2 lead after an ace from Maroon, but Houston Baptist came back on a 6-1 run to take an 8-7 lead. After a tie at 10 apiece, kills from sophomore CeCe Twitty and Mergen, along with miscues from the Huskies put the Wildcats back in front, 15-10 and forced Houston Baptist into a timeout. Villanova stayed strong with back-to-back kills from Mergen and sophomore Krista Andersen which extended the lead to 17-13. Petkovich connected on consecutive kills to give the Wildcats set point at 24-17 and though the Huskies stayed alive for an additional point an error gave Villanova the set win, 25-18 and a 3-0 match sweep.

The Wildcats will continue the tournament tomorrow where they face Sam Houston State at 3:00 p.m. and host Corpus Christi at 7:00 p.m.
