NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Senior outside hitter Krista Andersen (Lakeland, Fla.) tallied her 11th career double-double with 10 kills and a season-high 10 digs and Villanova (5-4) committed just 11 hitting errors total in a 3-0 sweep of Brown (2-3) in the Yale Invitational at Lee Amphitheater on Saturday evening. Following a 25-22 win in the opening set the Wildcats cruised the rest of the way with scores of 25-18 and 25-14 in the final two sets, respectively.
Andersen and junior outside hitter Carly Edwards (Okemos, Mich.) combined for 20 kills with just two errors and Villanova hit .289 as a team for the match, its highest mark of the still young season. Edwards hit .370 while tallying 10 kills without a single error while also adding two solo blocks and two block assists. Andersen had 10 kills and hit .308 for the match while posting her first double-double since the 2009 season.
Freshman outside hitter Lauren Carpenter (Lakewood, Colo.) led the Wildcats with 13 kills in the match and freshman setter Emma Pettit (Ft. Collins, Colo.) distributed 36 assists in the winning effort. Villanova hit .440 (14 kills, three errors) in the final set and pulled away from an 11-10 lead with a 14-4 run to finish the match.
In each of the three sets the Bears had the lead just one time before the Wildcats retook control. Villanova led 16-9 in the first set before Brown twice cut the lead to one point, but a kill by Carpenter and an attack error by the Bears closed the set and gave the Wildcats a 1-0 lead.
The second set began much like the first one did and Villanova gradually built a 16-10 lead and forced a Brown timeout. This time around there was no rally by the Bears and Andersen wound up nailing down six of her kills in the set.
Junior libero Mariah Henley (Hockessin, Del.) had 27 digs and surpassed the 20-dig plateau for the fifth time in nine matches this season. Sophomore setter Allie DiBernardo (Coto de Caza, Calif.) added 10 digs to assist in the Wildcats defensive effort.
Villanova heads to the West Coast next weekend to play in a tournament at Arizona State next Friday and Saturday. The opening match for the Wildcats is against the host Sun Devils on Friday afternoon at 3 p.m. Eastern time (Noon Pacific time).
NOTES: Edwards was named to the all-tournament team following the conclusion of play on Saturday night ... She totaled 25 kills and eight blocks in the three matches this weekend ... Andersen's last double-double was against Marquette on November 15, 2009.
