Volleyball Picks up Win in Final Day of the Carolina Classic

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Despite dropping a close 31-29 game one, the Villanova University volleyball team (4-3) picked up the 3-1 match victory over American University (4-5) today (Sept. 8) in the final day of the Carolina Classic. The win solidify's the Wildcats a second-place finish in the tournament but with an American win tonight over North Carolina the Wildcats would be named champions.

"The team played really well," said head coach Josh Steinbach. "We really improved over this tournament and it was tough to see that UNC victory slip out of our hands but the team responded well today. Dana (Tartazky) sparked us offensively and served well throughout the match while Chelsea (Graman) continued to set the ball well."

VU found itself down 1-0 after a tough 31-29 game one defeat but the Wildcats never gave up and came out and stormed through the next three games 30-27, 30-18 and 30-25.

Senior Alona Cherkez picked up another double-double as she had 23 kills and 14 digs. Dana Tartazky had 18 kills and four aces while senior Kacy Sellers dropped in 14 kills and six blocks.

Chelsea Graman once again reached the 60 assists mark with an even 60 on the day. Junior Emily Brown continued to play well from the back picking up 18 digs.

As a team the Wildcats out hit the Eagles .343 to .236 and recorded 22 more kills.

Villanova will be in action next on Tuesday, September 11 as they open up a eight-match home stand. They will host the University of Delaware at 7 p.m. inside Jake Nevin Field House.
