CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The Villanova University volleyball team (3-3) opened up the Carolina Classic with a big win over Western Kentucky University (6-2) before falling to the University of North Carolina (3-4) in the night game. Both contests went the distance with VU winning the WKU game 3-2 before falling to UNC 3-2.

In match one, senior Kacy Sellers led the way with 19 kills with a .389 hitting percentage. She also had a season high seven blocks. Senior Alona Cherkez chipped in 18 kills and five aces which ties a career high.

Junior Dana Tartazky had 10 kills while Emily Brown had 10 digs. Sophomore Chelsea Graman once again led the team in assists with 45.

"The win over Western Kentucky was huge," said head coach Josh Steinbach. "WKU is a very good team and served us extremely tough and we are very fortunate to walk off the court with a win."

Match two was another barn burner as it again went the distance with VU getting the short end of the decision. Cherkez had a huge game leading the team in both kills and digs with 29 and 23, respectively. Both were career highs for the senior.

Sellers chipped in 21 kills while Tartazky had 13 digs. Brown once again contributed heavily on the defensive side of the ball with 13 digs of her own.

Graman once again had a great day setting as she had 65 assists.

Villanova will continue play at the Carolina Classic tomorrow September 7 at 2 p.m. as they take on American University.
