Volleyball falls in three games to Duke
Sept. 4, 2004
LOS ANGELES, Calif. -
In its final match at the LMU Four Points Sheraton Classic, Villanova (0-3) was defeated in three games by Duke (1-2), falling by scores of 30-27, 30-20 and 30-24. Despite holding their own against stiff competition in each of its three matches in the tournament, the Wildcats were unable to come away with a victory.
In its second match of the day, Villanova shrugged off a quick four-point deficit in the first game against Duke and managed its first lead of the match at 9-8. However, after a 17-16 advantage midway through the game, the Wildcats never regained the lead. Duke then pulled away from a 20-20 tie by winning six of the next seven points and went on to the narrow victory.
That rally gave the Blue Devils' momentum heading into the second game, in which Duke never trailed and put the game out of reach with a nine-point run midway through the frame. The teams traded slim leads early in the third game, but as had been the case throughout the weekend, Villanova could not stay close to its opponent down the stretch. Duke finished the third game with an 8-3 run to close out the match.
Among the individual highlights for the Wildcats were a double-double of 15 kills and 14 digs for junior outside hitter Celine Nguyen, her second double-double in the three matches. Freshman setter Stephanie Olsen handed out 40 assists, and averaged better than 10 assists per game in the tournament.
Coming up next weekend, Villanova will host the Wildcat Classic at Nevin Gymnasium. The tournament will be held on September 10-11 with participating teams Binghamton, Fairfield and Virginia Commonwealth. The action starts on Friday at 4:30 p.m., and Villanova will play its first match of the tournament when it hosts Virginia Commonwealth at 7 p.m.
