Volleyball defeats Miami (Fla.) for first win

Villanova, PA - In a closely contested match, the Villanova Wildcats volleyball team was able to capture their first win (1-4) of the season, 3-2 over Miami (Fla.) (2-3) on Saturday morning at the Spartan Invitational on the campus of Michigan State University. Coming off a 3-0 loss to Michigan State the night before, the Wildcats came out and split the first two game against the Hurricanes (28-30, 30-28). Then, after losing the third game by a score of 28-30, they would bounce back to capture the fourth game to set up the decisive fifth game. In the fifth game, the Wildcats were in complete control, out-hitting Miami (Fla.), .769 to .167 to win the game, 15-8. Sophomore Alona Cherkez led the offensive attack for Villanova with 25 kills, while Dana Tartasky and Adrian Semrau each posted 15 kills and Kacy Sellers added 13. Cherkez also added 12 digs and eight other Wildcats also recoreded at least three digs in the match. Chelsea Graman added 46 assists and Jenna Link chipped in with 19 assists for the Wildcats. For the match, Villanova out-hit Miami (Fla.), .239 to .223 and had 16 more kills than the Hurricanes (78-62). However, the Hurricanes were able to double up on the Wildcats in blocks, 18-9. The Wildcats will be back in action later this afternoon against the Eastern Michigan Eagles (2-4) at 4 P.M.
