LUBBOCK, Tex. - The Villanova University volleyball team (1-1) took on Texas Tech University (3-1) tonight (Aug. 31) at the Red Raider Roundup and picked up its first loss of the year by a score of 3-2. VU and TTU battled throughout the match taking the contest to a deciding game five that saw the Wildcats come up just shy of a victory, 16-14.

The two seniors highlighted the match once again as Kacy Sellers and Alona Cherkez led the way offensively with 14 and 22 kills, respectively. Cherkez recorded the first double-double of the season as she collected 14 digs to go along with her kills. Sellers also contributed heavily on defense leading the team with five block assists.

Sophomore Chelsea Graman set the ball well again racking up 66 assists in 71 attempts. Junior Emily Brown played well from the back line getting 13 digs just one behind team leader Cherkez.

"The team played extremely hard tonight," said head coach Josh Steinbach. "The defense was on key throughout the contest and I think the team grew tonight as a unit. Texas Tech is a very talented team and is very well coached and I am proud of the way the team stepped up their game to meet the challenge."

The two teams went back-and-forth all night as game one was taken by the Red Raiders 30-20 before the Wildcats rattled off two victories in games two and three 30-28 and 30-24. Games four and five were highly contested as Texas Tech took the first 30-25 before squeaking out a 16-14 victory.

The fifth and deciding game was an exciting one as TTU jumped out to a 2-0 lead before a kill from Sellers and an attack error on Tech knotted it back up. The scoring would continue to go back-and-forth until the Wildcats took a two-point lead off a kill from Sellers once again, 9-7. Tech was forced to call a timeout and refocus as a team. They came back out and tied things up at nine. Things got back to normal as both teams continued to swap leads until it was 14-14 and a pair of Tech kills gave them the victory.

Villanova will continue play at the Raider Roundup tomorrow September 1 at 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. as they take on Southern Methodist University and Lamar University.
