FAIRFAX, Va. - The Villanova University volleyball team (1-0) opened up the 2007 season tonight (Aug. 29) with a 3-0 victory over hosting George Mason University (3-2). The win marks the first victory in head coach Josh Steinbach's career at the Main Line and it was a decisive one.
VU dominated the first and third games by scores of 30-16 and fought for a tough 30-28 victory in game two. As a team the wildcats hit a solid .383 and recorded 45 kills. Senior's Alona Cherkez and Kacy Sellers led the way with 14 and 13 kills, respectively. Sellers hit an astounding .436 for the match.
Sophomore Chelsea Graman had 38 assists as she set the pace for the Wildcats.
"Chelsea set the ball really well tonight," said Steinbach. "It was excellent to see her and the two seniors step it up especially in the second game. Kacy had some big hits near the end of that game and her poise and confidence helped motivate the rest of the team."
On the defensive side of the ball VU was led by juniors Whitney Harrington and Dana Tartazkey. Harrington had a total of four blocks including one solo to lead both teams while Tartazkey had 15 digs, seven more than anyone else on the court.
Villanova will next be in action Friday, August 31 at 8:30 p.m. as they travel to Lubbock, Texas to take on Texas Tech University (2-1). TTU most recently beat Arizona State University by a score of 3-0.
