Recap |  Box Score

Head coach Josh Steinbach:

Overall impressions...
"I didn't think we were nervous at all. We looked comfortable on the court, especially for the first match of the year. We played pretty well and a freshman setter starting in her first ever college game, but we were very calm, played hard and did what we needed to do to get a win."

On the team's strengths...
"We served well tonight and defended well. We managed the mistakes that we made and did not let them drag us down. That was the difference."

"It wasn't just one or two people who stepped up tonight- we played very well as a group. Everyone contributed for us. Allie (DiBernardo) set a nice game and Maggie (Mergen) played well, but everyone stepped up. It was good to get an overall team performance."

Freshman Allie DiBernardo:

On playing first college match...
"I was a little intimidated entering the match, but gained confidence in the huddle before the first set started. That took some pressure off."

On differences between high school and college...
"The biggest difference is the size and physicality of the girls and the speed of the game. College is much more fast-paced."

On what she can take from the first match...
"I'm going to continue to focus on my own skills and stay confident in my style of play. I feel a lot better having one match under my belt and am excited to get back to work tomorrow against Tennessee and Ohio- both are very good teams."

Senior Maggie Mergen:

Overall thoughts...
"I think we played some very good volleyball tonight. This match was a good starting point for the season. Personally, I feel like I played well and connected well with Allie (DiBernardo). My blocking still needs improvement, but me and all of the rest of us in the front row are making huge strides towards improving our game above the net."

On tomorrow's matches...
"I'm really excited to play against Tennessee and Ohio and am pumped to see how Nova's style of play will match up against them. Our styles are so different."

Senior Kim Maroon

Overall thoughts...
"I think we played really well for the first match of the year. "We were able to bounce back from Maryland's runs or our hiccups on the outside and responded with runs of our own. We really need to limit mistakes and focus on our side of the court first so we can put our opponents under pressure."

On personal performance...
"I was happy with my senior debut- specifically my serve receiving and defense in the first and second sets. When Maryland started to attack the ball towards parts of the court other than mine I think my teammates were able to step up and play good defense as well."
