Villanova Opens Season With 3-2 Loss to Cal State Fullerton

Long Beach, Calif. - Villanova (0-1) lost its season-opening match 3-2 (30-23, 24-30, 30-26, 15-30, 6-15) to Cal State Fullerton this evening in the Wildcats' first match in the Long Beach State Tournament in LBSU's Pyramid. Senior Adrian Semrau (Grafton, Ohio) led 'Nova with 19 kills. She also recorded five digs, three blocks and a hitting percentage of .317. She was joined in double figure kills by sophomore Alona Cherkez (Crimea, Ukraine) who posted the 15th double double of her career (15 kills and 17 digs) and junior Kacy Sellers (Battle Creek, Mich.) who had ten kills, six digs and three blocks. The Titans were led by Breanna Trudeau who tallied 20 kills and a hitting percentage of .486. Deven Bukoski (15 kills), Brittany Moore (10 kills) and Danielle Hintzeman (10 kills) also contributed for CSF. Fullerton limited the 'Cats to a hitting percentage of .123 and out-blocked with Wildcats 9.0 to 6.0. Villanova is now 14-16 in season-openers and 187-158-1 in non-conference tournaments. The Wildcats continue in the tournament tomorrow with a double-header against #13 Missouri at 2 p.m. PST and host Long Beach State in the night cap at 7:30 p.m. PST.
