O'Sullivan Places 14th in Finals of 5,000m in Athens

ATHENS, GREECE - On Monday, Aug. 23, former Villanova track standout Sonia O'Sullivan competed in the finals of the 5,000m at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece. O'Sullivan, running for her native Ireland, finished the event in 14th place with a time of 16:20.90. Winning the goal medal was Meseret Defar of Ethiopia, who finished the race in 14:45.65. Isabella Ochichi of Kenya won the silver medal in 14:48.19, and Tirunesh Dibaba of Ethiopia took the bronze in 14:51.83. Two other former Wildcats will begin competition on Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. in the preliminaries of the 1,500m run. If Carrie Tollefson (United States) and Carmen Douma-Hussar (Canada) advance to the next round, they will compete in the semifinals on Thursday at 1:30 p.m. The finals of the event are scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 28 at 1:30 p.m.
