VILLANOVA, Pa. - Villanova's Sheila Reid is headed to the 2012 London Summer Olympics.
It was announced today by Athletics Canada that Reid, a five-time individual national champion, 12-time All-American and 12-time BIG EAST champion during a stellar Villanova career, will represent her nation in London.
Reid becomes Villanova's fifth representative at the 2012 Summer Games. She joins former track athletes Marina Muncan (Serbia) and Adrian Blincoe (New Zealand) along with basketball alumni Lisa Karcic (Croatia) and Andrew Sullivan (Great Britain) as Wildcats slated to compete in London. Villanova has been represented at every Summer Olympics since 1948.
Reid, a Newmarket, Ont., native who completed her college career last spring, won the 5,000m Canadian Olympic Trial on June 30 in Calgary but her time of 16:15 was shy of the "A" standard that would have cemented her place on the Olympic squad. Reid, however, has twice reached the "B" standard and an appeals process resulted in her gaining the nod under the "Rising Star" provision.
"I'm relieved and excited," stated Reid, a Capital One Academic All-American. "This season has been more challenging than ones in the past. I had my collegiate obligations while also trying to satisfy the Olympic standards. I feel like it would be hard to have everything and I was very disappointed in my collegiate season. This is nice way to kind of sum everything up, to know that all the hard work I did before this wasn't for nothing."
"I think anyone who knows me and knows the kind of racer I am, knows I race to win. When you kind of chase the times it makes it kind of a different race. I'm just excited because I know that now that I have made it to this stage, I know I can kind of do my best and just run for place instead of just time."
"I am thrilled that Sheila will get to compete in an Olympic Games at such a young age," stated Villanova head women's track coach Gina Procaccio. "The experience will be invaluable to her future success."
During the 2011 cross country season Reid defended her individual national title at the NCAA Championships and was also the individual champion at both the BIG EAST Championships and NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional for the third straight year. Her efforts during the season helped lead the Wildcats to their fourth straight conference title and a third place team finish at the national championships meet.
Following the end of the cross country season Reid was presented with the Honda Sports Award for cross country, marking the third time in her career she received one of the prestigious Honda Awards after being the winner for both cross country and track last year.
During the collegiate outdoor track season which ended in June, Reid anchored Villanova to a Championship of America title in the distance medley relay at the Penn Relays. It was the 30th title all-time at the Penn Relays for the Wildcats and the 11th in the distance medley relay. Reid also ran in the 5000 meters at the NCAA East Regional and the NCAA Championships, where she repeated as an All-American.
Reid was named the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) National Scholar-Athlete of the Year for cross country after both the 2011 and the 2012 seasons and won the same award for the 2011 outdoor track season.
Opening ceremonies for the 2012 London Summer Olympics are set for July 27.
