Women’s Track & Field Earns 20 All-BIG EAST Honors

NEW YORK - The official list of all-conference performers from last weekend’s outdoor BIG EAST Championships was announced on Tuesday afternoon, and the Villanova women’s track & field team had 14 student-athletes combine to earn 20 All-BIG EAST honors during the conference meet. Headlining the list were six athletes who earned all-conference recognition in both an individual event and a relay.

While hosting the BIG EAST outdoor meet for the third time in the last four years, the Wildcats finished in the top-three of eight individual events and two relays. Fifth-year senior Angel Piccirillo (Homer City, Pa.) and junior Siofra Cleirigh Buttner (Dublin, Ireland) won the 800 meters and the 1500 meters, respectively, and both ran a leg of the team’s champion 4x400 meter relay.

Freshmen Danielle Burns (Phoenix, Ariz.) and Amari Onque-Shabazz (Plainfield, N.J.) ran the first half of the 4x400 relay ahead of Piccirillo and Cleirigh Buttner, while other individual winners were sophomore Bella Burda (Pleasant Valley, N.Y.) in the 5000 meters and senior Caroline Hamilton (Nottingham, Pa.) in the javelin. Hamilton successfully defended her conference title in the javelin and now has four All-BIG EAST honors to her credit.

Onque-Shabazz finished was the runner-up individually in the 400 meters, while Burns finished third in the 100 meter hurdles. Senior Veronica Scott (Plymouth, N.H.) and sophomore Nicole Hutchinson (West Vancouver, B.C.) also received a pair of All-BIG EAST accolades. Scott finished third in the 400 meter hurdles and ran on the runner-up 4x800 meter relay, while Hutchinson came in second to Cleirigh Buttner in the 1500 meters and anchored the 4x800 relay.



Villanova scored in 18 of the 22 events which were contested at the BIG EAST Championships, and scored a total of 176 points to finish second in the team standings. This is the 16th time that the Wildcats have made the awards podium with a top-three team finish outdoors, while the team has now won 146 events and earned 497 All-BIG EAST honors all-time.
