Villanova will compete in the BIG EAST Championships this weekend, with the conference meet being held over three days from Friday through Sunday. Rutgers is hosting the conference championship at the Track & Field Complex in Piscataway.

Caroline Hamilton Wins Michael Tranghese Leadership Award
Senior javelin thrower Caroline Hamilton (Nottingham, Pa.) was announced on Wednesday afternoon as the BIG EAST female winner of the 2017 Michael Tranghese Postgraduate Leadership Award. The award is given to one male and one female student-athlete from a BIG EAST-sponsored sport and is selected by the BIG EAST Conference Academic Affairs Committee. Hamilton is the first Villanova student-athlete to earn this prestigious honor.
Nicole Hutchinson Qualifies for NCAA Championships in 1500 Meters
Sophomore middle distance runner Nicole Hutchinson (West Vancouver, B.C.) ran a blistering time of 4:13.71 in the national quarterfinal heats of the 1500 meters and secured a spot at the NCAA Championships in her latest remarkable race on Saturday night. Hutchinson was one of 12 qualifiers from the NCAA East Preliminary at the Kentucky Outdoor Track & Field Complex who punched their ticket to the national meet in Saturday’s quarterfinal round.
Siofra Cleirigh Buttner Heads to NCAA Championships in 800 Meters
After running the fastest 800 meter race of her collegiate career, junior Siofra Cleirigh Buttner (Dublin, Ireland) is headed to the NCAA Championships as the top qualifier from the national quarterfinal heats run during the NCAA East Preliminary at the Kentucky Outdoor Track & Field Complex on Friday evening. Cleirigh Buttner crossed the finish line in a blistering 2:02.11 to win her heat and lead the 12 qualifiers from the East region who will compete at the national championships next month.
Trio of Wildcats Advance to Quarterfinals at NCAA East Preliminary
The first day of competition at the NCAA East Preliminary was a good one for Villanova, as three Wildcats advanced to the national quarterfinal round of their respective events at the Kentucky Outdoor Track & Field Complex on Thursday evening. Junior Siofra Cleirigh Buttner (Dublin, Ireland) is a quarterfinal qualifier in the 800 meters, while sophomore Nicole Hutchinson (West Vancouver, B.C.) and senior Angel Piccirillo (Homer City, Pa.) each advanced out of the first round of the 1500 meters. Also on Thursday night, sophomore Bella Burda (Pleasant Valley, N.Y.) ran in a national semifinal heat of the 10000 meters and finished in 15th place out of 46 runners.
Bella Burda Earns Capital One Academic All-District Honors
Sophomore distance runner Bella Burda (Pleasant Valley, N.Y.) was recognized on the Capital One Academic All-District 2 squad which was announced on Thursday afternoon. The recognition includes accolades from cross country as well as the indoor and outdoor track & field seasons, and Burda will now move on to the national ballot for Capital One Academic All-America consideration.
Women’s Track & Field Sends Four Athletes to NCAA East Preliminary
The accepted athletes for the NCAA preliminary meets were announced Thursday afternoon and Villanova will have four women’s distance runners headed to the East Preliminary meet in Lexington, Ky. next week. The regional meet runs from May 25-27 at the UK Outdoor Track and Field Complex on the Kentucky campus. Fifth-year senior Angel Piccirillo (Homer City, Pa.) and sophomore Nicole Hutchinson (West Vancouver, B.C.) will each run the 1500 meters, while junior Siofra Cleirigh Buttner (Dublin, Ireland) and sophomore Bella Burda (Pleasant Valley, N.Y.) are qualifiers in the 800 meters and the 10000 meters, respectively.
Women’s Track & Field Earns 20 All-BIG EAST Honors
The official list of all-conference performers from last weekend’s outdoor BIG EAST Championships was announced on Tuesday afternoon, and the Villanova women’s track & field team had 14 student-athletes combine to earn 20 All-BIG EAST honors during the conference meet. Headlining the list were six athletes who earned all-conference recognition in both an individual event and a relay.
Five Event Titles Spark Wildcats to Second Place BIG EAST Finish
Backed by victories in five different events and a total of 14 top-three finishes, the women’s track & field team scored 176 points and finished second in the team race at the BIG EAST Championships which wrapped up at Villanova Stadium on a soggy Saturday afternoon. Middle distance runners Angel Piccirillo (Homer City, Pa.) and Siofra Cleirigh Buttner (Dublin, Ireland) were the champions of the 800 meters and the 1500 meters, respectively, and also ran the final two legs of the Wildcats first-place 4x400 meter relay.
