No. 9 Women's Track and Field Ready for BIG EAST Indoor Championships

For the third consecutive year the BIG EAST Indoor Championships will be held at The New Balance Track and Field Center at The Armory in New York City. The women's squad enters the meet ranked No. 9 in the nation and is poised to put its strongest team out since last winning the championships 10 years ago.
The Wildcats have 17 student-athletes qualified in 13 events this year.
"I am very exciting about the BIG EAST championships this year," said head coach Gina Procaccio. "This is the best group we have since we last one the championships 10 years ago. I am excited that we are in a position like that once again."
Sophomore Shericka Ward will kick off the women's meet with the trials for the 60m hurdles on Saturday, Feb. 20 at noon. Ward holds the fastest time in the conference and has already posted an NCAA provisional qualifying mark. Ward will also run the 200m dash and has potential to score for `Nova in either event.
Sophomore Christie Verdier will run the 400m and looks to have a good showing based on recent relay performances.
Freshman Ariann Neutts ranks second in the conference in the 800m and has already posted an NCAA provisional mark. She will be a strong contender in the event.
Villanova is full of strong competitors in the 1,000m. Junior Sheila Reid holds the fastest conference time, while senior Nicole Schappert and sophomore Bogdana Mimic are ranked fourth and fifth, respectively.
Schappert ranks first in the mile and has posted an NCAA automatic qualifying time. She ranks third in the nation in the mile and will contend for the individual title on Sunday. The Wildcats also have strong contenders in juniors Ali Smith and Amanda Marino.
Reid and Mimic are ranked one-two, respectively in the 3,000m and both have recorded NCAA automatic qualifiers. Reid is currently ranked first in the NCAA, while Mimic is third. Schappert, Marino and senior Kaitlyn Tallman have posted NCAA provisional marks and are ranked in the BIG EAST's top-10.
Villanova has strong relay entries in the 4x400m and 4x800m. The distance medley relay leads the conference and has earned an automatic qualifier to the NCAA championships. They are currently ranked second in the country.
