PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Junior distance runner Emily Lipari (Greenvale, N.Y.) was named the BIG EAST Female Track Athlete of the Week in an announcement by the conference office this afternoon. Lipari wins the award for the second time in her career after a strong season debut at the Great Dane Classic last Friday night.
In her first indoor meet of the season Lipari won the 3000 meters at the Great Dane Classic with a personal best and meet record time of 9:20.07. In addition to breaking her previous personal best in the 3000 meters by almost nine full seconds Lipari also produced the fifth-fastest time in the nation in the event this season.
Lipari won her race on Friday night by a margin of more than nine seconds to pace a field that included 30 runners, with Villanova athletes accounting for five of the first seven runners across the finish line. Lipari's time of 9:20.07 is the fastest in the BIG EAST this season and is more than 17 seconds faster to this point in the year than any non-Villanova athlete.
This marks the second consecutive week that the Wildcats have had a runner named BIG EAST Track Athlete of the Week. Last week freshman Kelsey Margey received the honor after setting a meet record in winning the 1000 meters at the NYC Gotham Cup.
Lipari was named the BIG EAST Track Athlete of the Week last year after the Great Dane Classic as well. In the 2012 meet she ran what was then a personal best time in the Mile and took first place honors in the race.
Villanova returns to action this Friday and Saturday when it competes in the Penn State National meet.
