VILLANOVA, Pa. - Freshman middle distance runner Kelsey Margey (Huntington, N.Y.) has been named the BIG EAST Track Athlete of the Week and also earned honorable mention national honors from the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). Margey won the 1000 meters last week at the NYC Gotham Cup and is the first Villanova athlete to earn weekly track honors this season.
In her race last week Margey registered a career best time of 2:43.89 in the 1000 meters, beating her previous personal best by a margin of more than five seconds. She also won the race, which included 42 entries, by more than four seconds. So far on the young season Villanova runners have the top five times in the BIG EAST in the 1000 meters, with Margey leading that group.
Margey also ran the third leg of the 4x800 meter relay at the Gotham Cup and helped the Wildcats win the relay with a time of 8:49.07. Villanova came in more than a full minute ahead of the second place team in the field of nine relay squads.
In her first two collegiate track meets Margey has been victorious in both of her individual races. Last month at the Jack Pyrah Invitational she took first place and also set a meet record in the 800 meters with a winning time of 2:10.99.
Villanova returns to the New York Armory this Friday evening to compete in the Great Dane Classic.
