Reid and Mimic Finish 10th and 17th, Respectively, at NCAA Championships
June 9, 2012
DES MOINES, Iowa--With temperatures pushing 90 degrees on a hot afternoon at Drake Stadium senior Sheila Reid (Newmarket, Ont.) and junior Bogdana Mimic (Pancevo, Serbia) ran in the national finals of the 5000 meters at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Saturday afternoon. Reid came in 10th with a time of 16:31.48 and Mimic placed 17th in 16:53.66, concluding four days of competition for Villanova at the national meet this week.
The field of 24 runners went out at a slow pace given the heat and the pack did not start to break up until after the first 1200 meters had been completed. The three leading runners broke away from the rest of the pack in the final 800 meters and Abbey D'Agostino of Dartmouth won the individual title in 16:11.34, edging Megan Goethals of Washington by three-hundredths of a second in a close finish.
With the national championships meet now completed the official All-America teams for each event will be announced on Monday afternoon. Reid and Mimic will each earn All-America honors for the third straight year as a result of reaching the finals site of the NCAA Championships.
Upon official announcement of the All-America teams Reid will become a 12-time All-American spanning all seasons (cross country, indoor track & field, outdoor track & field) and Mimic will be a six-time All-American.
In addition to Reid and Mimic the Wildcats also had senior sprinter Shericka Ward (Leesburg, Fla.) in competition this week in Des Moines, where she finished in 10th place overall and fourth in her heat in the national semifinals on Thursday evening. All three Villanova athletes made their third consecutive appearance at the finals site of the national championships and Ward will become a three-time All-American.
ALL-AMERICA NOTES: The United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announces the All-America teams following the cross country, indoor and outdoor championship meets during the year ... For the indoor and outdoor seasons the organization announces first team, second team and honorable mention All-America honors for each participant that reaches the site of the NCAA Championship finals, although all honors are contingent on the official announcement made following the championship meets.
