GREENSBORO, N.C. - Junior Emily Lipari (Greenvale, N.Y.) ran her second fastest time wearing a Villanova uniform in the 1500 meters and sophomore Stephanie Schappert (Delray Beach, Fla.) came up with a big personal best as both moved on to the national quarterfinals on the first day of competition at the NCAA East Regional at Aggie Stadium on Thursday night. Freshman Angel Piccirillo (Homer City, Pa.) also heads to the quarterfinals in the 800 meters and all three of the Wildcats moving on to the next round were automatic qualifiers in their respective events.
Lipari and Schappert ran in separate heats in the national first round of the 1500 meters and each finished in the top three of their heat to secure a berth in the quarterfinals on Saturday night. Lipari finished second in her heat with a time of 4:19.27, just one-tenth of a second off the winning pace in the heat. That time is a season best for Lipari and the fastest she has run in the 1500 meters in a Villanova race since she put up a time of 4:17.17 at the Mt. SAC Relays last year.
Out of the four heats that were held on Thursday night both Lipari and Schappert ranked in the top 10 overall in the group of 24 that will race in the quarterfinals. Schappert registered a time of 4:18.94 in the fourth and final heat, which produced the top two overall times for the day. Schappert easily bested her previous top time of 4:21.20, which was only set earlier this season at the Raleigh Relays. The national quarterfinals of the 1500 meters are scheduled for Saturday night at 6:30 p.m., with the top five finishers in each of two heats and the next two fastest times moving on to the NCAA Championships site in Eugene, Ore. next month.
Junior Nicky Akande (Lawrenceville, Ga.) and senior Ariann Neutts (Succasunna, N.J.) ran in the same 1500 meters heat as Lipari on Thursday evening. Akande came in eighth in the heat with a time of 4:22.99, while Neutts finished in 11th place and posted a mark of 4:29.11.
In the first round of the 800 meters Piccirillo came in third in her heat with a time of 2:06.82 and grabbed the final automatic qualifying spot from her heat. She was less than three-tenths off the leading pace in her heat and qualified for the quarterfinals, which take place tomorrow evening starting at 7 p.m.
Freshman Kelsey Margey (Huntington, N.Y.) came in fifth in the first heat of the 800 meters and tallied a time of 2:07.75. She was less than a second off the cutoff time from all six heats that would have advanced her to the quarterfinals.
One other Wildcats athlete was in competition on Thursday night. Sophomore Faith Dismuke (Passaic, N.J.) came in seventh in her first round heat of the 400 meter hurdles. Dismuke record a time of 59.92, marking the second time in her career that she has finished in under one minute. The first occasion was at the Penn Relays earlier this year.
The first event for Villanova on Friday is the first round of the 100 meter hurdles. Sophomore Emerald Walden (Lafayette Hill, Pa.) is in the second of six heats starting at 5 p.m.
