Reid and Akande Star for Wildcats in 1500 Meters at Swarthmore Meet
May 14 2012
SWARTHMORE, Pa.--Senior middle distance runner Sheila Reid (Newmarket, Ont.) and sophomore Nicky Akande (Lawrenceville, Ga.) both ran their top times of the season in the 1500 meters at the Swarthmore Last Chance Meet on Monday evening.
Reid won the 1500 meters race with a time of 4:14.27 to pace a field of 57 runners and Akande finished in fifth place in 4:17.33 to register a new personal best in the event. In addition senior Callie Hogan (Bay Shore, N.Y.) finished in 15th place with a time of 4:31.28, rounding out the three Wildcats that ran the race.
The winning time for Reid marked her fastest race in the 1500 meters since in more than a year and she won by more than a second over former Villanova national champion and fellow Canadian Carmen Hussar, who was the runner-up in 4:15.57.
Akande shattered her personal best time in the 1500 meters by nearly six full seconds and finished fifth in Monday night's race, although she and Reid were the top two affiliated collegiate runners across the finish line. No other collegiate runners finished in the top 10 of the race, with Jessica O'Connell of West Virginia coming in 11th place. She was four seconds behind Akande and seven seconds off Reid's winning pace.
The previous top time for Akande in the 1500 meters was 4:23.31, a time she ran at the Colonial Relays earlier this season. Since then she has established herself as one of the top 800 meters runners in the region. With the selection for the NCAA East Regional meet coming up soon Akande is ranked 11th in the East Region in the 800 meters, while Reid is ranked 39th in the 1500 meters based on a race at the Colonial Relays last month.
NOTES: Despite its name the Swarthmore Last Chance Meet was not an official "last chance meet" in terms of qualifying times for the upcoming NCAA meets ... Had the times counted towards the outdoor season rankings Reid would have run the seventh fastest 1500 meters time in the East Region this year and Akande would have had the 17th fastest time ... Declarations for the NCAA East Regional meet will be announced later this week.
