May 12, 2012
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.--Junior middle distance runner Bogdana Mimic (Pancevo, Serbia) led a group of four Villanova runners who competed in the 1500 meters at the Virginia Challenge on Saturday afternoon, where her time of 4:18.63 was one of the top times in the East Region to this point in the season.
Mimic finished in eighth place out of 29 runners in the 1500 meters race at Lannigan Field and her finishing time ranks her 21st in the East Region heading into the selections later this week for the NCAA East Regional meet. She is also ranked sixth in the region in the 5000 meters after running a personal best time in that event at the Mt. SAC Relays earlier this season.
In the 1500 meters race Mimic came within less than four-tenths of a second of matching her personal best time set last year. She was followed in the race by junior Ariann Neutts (Succasunna, N.J.) in 16th place (4:22.91) and the freshmen duo of Stephanie Schappert (Delray Beach, Fla.) and Courtney Chapman (Fayetteville, N.Y.) in 22nd place (4:26.90) and 27th place (4:32.32), respectively.
Neutts and Schappert both registered personal best times in the 1500 meters, with Neutts surpassing the time she ran earlier this season at the Big Five Invite to open the season. Schappert, meanwhile, continued a strong freshman campaign by setting a new personal best mark for the third time this season. Her time of 4:26.90 in Saturday's race at Virginia was more than three full seconds faster than the time she ran in the preliminaries of the BIG EAST Championships last week.
