PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Sophomore Katherine Petruzzellis (Annandale, N.J.) opened up competition for Villanova at the BIG EAST Championships on Friday afternoon, as the first four events of the heptathlon were contested at the Rutgers Track & Field Complex. Petruzzellis is in fourth place out of 10 competitors midway through the heptathlon after ranking among the top five athletes in three of the first four events.
The first event in the heptathlon was the 100 meter hurdles and Petruzzellis recorded a personal best time of 14.86 to come in fifth in the field. The group then moved on to the shot put, where Petruzzellis registered a distance of 11.33 meters, again ranking fifth.
In the high jump Petruzzellis and Carly Loeffel of Notre Dame tied for the lead with heights of 1.69 meters. That mark represents a collegiate best outdoors for Petruzzellis, who finished the day by competing in the 200 meters and recording a time of 26.85.
Petruzzellis currently has 3,043 points after four events, while Loeffel has the lead with 3,322 points. As a freshman last season Petruzzellis earned a seventh place finish at the BIG EAST meet.
The majority of athletes from each team begin competition on Saturday afternoon.
