Verdier Runs Top BIG EAST Time in 400 Meters at Hurricane Alumni Invitational
April 17, 2011
MIAMI, Fla. - In a meet that saw running events delayed for several hours due to rain junior Christie Verdier (Baldwin, N.Y.) established this season's leading BIG EAST time in the 400 meters with a mark of 53.70 to headline a number of strong results for Villanova at the Hurricane Alumni Invitational hosted by Miami at Cobb Stadium on Saturday evening.
Verdier was second overall and the top collegiate athlete in the 400 meters, coming in ahead of a group of runners from Louisiana State with her best time of the season. Only an unattached runner finished ahead of Verdier by a margin of just two-hundredths of a second. Verdier also set a new personal best by a half second in the 400 meters, eclipsing the time she had at last year's outdoor BIG EAST Championships.
Also running well for the Wildcats was junior sprinter Shericka Ward (Leesburg, Fla.), who competed in the 100 meter hurdles as well as the 200 meters. She came in fifth in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 13.41 and took seventh in the 200 meters, crossing the finish line in 24.05. Ward was part of a strong field of competitors in the 200 meters and finished second in her heat to a runner from Louisiana State.
Senior Kristen Mahon (Robbinsville, N.J.) and freshman Mary Bohi (Shamong, N.J.) both ran in the 400 meter hurdles and respectively placed fifth and 10th overall. Mahon registered a time of 1:00.27 and Bohi finished in 1:03.74, which was good for fourth place in her individual heat.
Villanova entered one relay quartet in the 4x400 meter relay and placed third in 3:41.23 with a lineup that included Verdier leading off followed by Mahon, senior Jessona McDonald (Holbrook, N.Y.) and junior Ashley Dunbar (Manchester, N.J.).
In the field events, freshman Samantha Francis (Kingston, Jamaica) came in second in the triple jump (12.44 meters) and tied for eighth place in the long jump (5.65 meters).
The competition at the Hurricane Alumni Invitational featured top collegiate teams as well as unattached runners and a number of athletic club runners.
