Wildcats Put Up Blistering Times in 800 Meters at Hurricane Alumni Invitational
April 13, 2013
CORAL GABLES, Fla. - Villanova recorded fast times across the board on a great day of competition in the Hurricane Invitational at Cobb Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The highlight for the Wildcats was the 800 meters, in which Villanova accounted for five of the first six finishers in the field of 26 runners.
The first four Wildcats runners in the 800 meters each set or tied personal best times in the event, led by freshman Angel Piccirillo (Homer City, Pa.) winning the event with a personal best time of 2:05.31. She had a winning margin of just over seven-tenths of a second over freshman teammate Kelsey Margey (Huntington, N.Y.), who tied her own top mark with a time of 2:06.03.
Junior Emily Lipari (Greenvale, N.Y.) and sophomore Stephanie Schappert (Delray Beach, Fla.) finished in fourth and fifth places, respectively, with personal best times of 2:06.77 and 2:07.14. Lipari eclipsed her previous best mark by exactly one second. Junior Nicky Akande (Lawrenceville, Ga.) rounded out the Villanova group in the 800 meters with a sixth place finish (2:08.34).
In the sprint events the Wildcats were led by sophomore Emerald Walden (Lafayette Hill, Pa.), who recorded personal best times in both the 100 meter hurdles and the 200 meters. Walden came in third out of 18 in the 100 meter hurdles and was the top collegiate finisher in the event with a time of 13.67. She lowered her previous mark - set last week at the Colonial Relays - by one-tenth of a second. Walden also came in 31st in the 200 meters with a personal top time of 25.31.
Sophomore Varonica Johnson (Charlotte, N.C.) came in 11th overall in both the 100 meters (11.87) and the 200 meters (24.33), while freshman Michaela Wilkins (Ellicott City, Md.) placed fourth in the 400 meters with a time of 55.81. Sophomore Faith Dismuke (Passaic, N.J.) rounded out the sprint results for Villanova with a fifth place finish in the 400 meter hurdles (1:01.16).
Senior Shannon Browne (Staten Island, N.Y.) was the runner-up in the 1500 meters, coming in second in a field of 27 competitors with a time of 4:37.64.
In addition to the individual running results the Wildcats also had two strong races in the 4x400 meter relay. Villanova's top relay team came in second out of eight relay squads with a time of 3:43.62, while the Wildcats second team finished fourth in 3:46.33.
