Wildcats Dominate at Colonial Relays, Capture Second Straight Team Title
April 8, 2012
Led by victories in the 800 meters and the 1500 meters by senior Sheila Reid (Newmarket, Ont.) Villanova won its second straight team championship at the Colonial Relays in dominant fashion. In two days of competition the Wildcats amassed 152 team points to easily outdistance Delaware (90 points) and the rest of the field, which included 27 teams that earned points in the standings. Along the way to the team title Villanova won six individual events and one relay.
In races on Friday afternoon Reid doubled up in the 800 and the 1500 meters races and was at the forefront of a large group of Wildcats that ran in a group in both races. Reid posted a winning time of 2:07.65 in the 800 meters and later crossed the finish line in 4:20.78 to win the 1500 meters.
Other individual wins for Villanova came from senior sprinter Christie Verdier (Baldwin, N.Y.) in the 400 meters, sophomore jumper Samantha Francis (Kingston, Jamaica) in the championship section of the triple jump, senior Julia Arduini (Fairfield, Conn.) in the javelin and freshman Katherine Petruzzellis (Annandale, N.J.) in the university section of the high jump. Verdier was first out of 44 runners in the 400 meters with a winning time of 54.45.
In the jumps Francis surpassed 12 meters for the first time this season and won the championship section of the event with a distance of 12.07 meters. Petruzzellis cleared a season-best height of 1.65 meters on her way to winning her section of the high jump. Arduini was also first in the javelin with a throw of 46.19 meters.
The final win for the Wildcats was in the distance medley relay, where a lineup of senior Bogdana Mimic (Pancevo, Serbia), junior Shannon Browne (Staten Island, N.Y.), senior Erin Ryan (Doylestown, Pa.) and freshman Stephanie Schappert (Delray Beach, Fla.) recorded a winning time of 11:35.97.
Reid may have been the headliner with her two individual victories but the trio of Mimic and sophomores Nicky Akande (Lawrenceville, Ga.) and Emily Lipari (Greenvale, N.Y.) were also instrumental in Villanova combining to score XX team points in the 800 meters and 1500 meters races. Mimic was second in the 1500 meters (4:23.03) and 13th in the 800 meters (2:12.47), Akande finished third in both races with times of 2:09.15 and 4:23.31 and Lipari placed fifth in the 800 meters (2:09.67) and seventh in the 1500 meters (4:24.41).
A group of four freshmen, including Petruzzellis and sprinters Varonica Johnson (Charlotte, N.C.), Qualitra Brown (Suffolk, Va.) and Emerald Walden (Lafayette Hill, Pa.) all fared well in the sprints. Johnson was the runner-up in both the 100 meters and the 200 meters and posted a time of 11.88 in the semifinals of the 100 meters competition. She also registered a time of 24.16 in the 200 meters race. Walden registered times of 14.17 and 14.29 in the preliminaries and finals of the 100 meter hurdles and wound up with a third place finish, while Brown finished eighth in the semifinals of the 100 meters (12.44) and 10th in the 400 meters (58.11).
