April 6, 2013
WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - Sophomore sprinter Emerald Walden (Lafayette Hill, Pa.) defended her lead in the 100 meter hurdles and finished in first place at the Colonial Relays at Zable Stadium on Saturday afternoon. Junior Samantha Yeats (Califon, N.J.) won the high jump competition on Saturday and Villanova finished in fourth place in the final team standings 86 points. There were 31 different teams to earn points towards the standings at the two-day meet.
Walden went into the finals of the 100 meter hurdles as the favorite to win after she came in first in the preliminary heats on Friday afternoon. In her race on Saturday afternoon Walden recorded a time of 13.91 and won by a margin of more than two-tenths of a second.
In addition to Walden reaching the finals of the hurdles sophomore Varonica Johnson (Charlotte, N.C.) raced in the finals of the 100 meter dash. She recorded the same exact time of 12.07 in the finals as she ran in the preliminaries yesterday and wound up with a fifth place finish in the event.
Yeats came in first out of 23 athletes that competed in the high jump. She cleared a height of 1.71 meters on her in order to earn the first-place standing. The top three finishers all cleared 1.71 meters but Yeats was the only one to do so on the first try.
Freshman Anne Yahiro (Downers Grove, Ill.) and junior Victoria Profit (Nissquogue, N.Y.) each competed in the triple jump. The pair came in third and fifth, respectively, out of 27 competitors and each registered a new personal best mark in the process. Yahiro recorded a distance of 11.59 meters to break the mark she established at the Armory Collegiate Invitational during the indoor season, while Profit cleared 11.40 meters and surpassed a personal best set two years ago.
The other strong results for the Wildcats on Saturday came in the relays. Villanova placed third in the 4x800 meter relay and was sixth in the 4x400 meter relay. In the 4x800 race the Wildcats registered a time of 9:00.78 and were third out of 21 teams in the field.
