Sophomore sprinter Emerald Walden (Lafayette Hill, Pa.) had the fastest time out of 41 entries in the preliminary heats of the 100 meter hurdles and Villanova got off to a successful start in the Colonial Relays at Zable Stadium on Friday afternoon. Following the first day of competition at this weekend's meet the Wildcats were in fourth place in the team standings out of 24 teams that had scored points.
Walden ran in the third preliminary heat of the 100 meter hurdles and had a time of 13.77 to lead the field of 41 hurdlers competing. Sophomore Katherine Petruzzellis (Annandale, N.J.) came in second in her heat of the hurdles and recorded a time of 15.35.
Overall it was a great day for the Villanova sprinters. Sophomore Varonica Johnson (Charlotte, N.C.) finished first in her heat of the 100 meters with a time of 12.07 and ranked fourth overall out of 46 competitors. She also ran in the 200 meters and her time of 24.62 placed her eighth in a field of 61 runners. Walden came in fourth in her heat of the 200 meters with a time of 25.97 and was 23rd overall.
Among the other strong results for the Wildcats on Friday was a runner-up finish for sophomore Courtney Chapman (Fayetteville, N.Y.) in the University section of the 3000 meters. She registered a time of 9:56.65 and finished second out of the 28 runners in the race.
Senior distance runner Summer Cook (Thornton, Colo.) registered a personal best time of 16:17.15 in a fourth place finish in the Championship section of the 5000 meters. Her time was 11 seconds faster than her top indoor time, which she set less than two months ago at the BIG EAST Championships.
In the middle distance events sophomore Faith Dismuke (Passaic, N.J.) and senior Ariann Neutts (Succasunna, N.J.) finished strong in the 800 meters and the 1500 meters, respectively. Dismuke came in third in her heat of the 800 meters with a time of 2:11.57 and was eighth out of 67 runners overall. Neutts placed eighth out of 40 in the 1500 meters with a time of 4:29.07.
In the field events on Friday sophomores Alexandra Wasik (Medina, Ohio) and Jamie Klein (Hawthorne, N.J.) finished third in the pole vault and the javelin, respectively. Wasik cleared a height of 3.84 meters and Klein threw for a distance of 43.21 meters. Villanova had three of the top nine finishers out of 21 athletes in the pole vault. Sophomore Kathleen McPhillips (Carlisle, Pa.) and freshman Virginia LaMacchia (Bloomsburg, Pa.) each cleared a height of 3.60 meters.
The two-day Colonial Relays continue on Saturday morning.
