NEW YORK - Junior Stephanie Schappert (Delray Beach, Fla.) set a new personal best in the Mile and Villanova competed in four events as the Armory Collegiate Invitational at the New York Armory concluded on Saturday afternoon. The action for the Wildcats on the second day of the meet included two individual running events, one relay and one field event.
Schappert and senior Nicky Akande (Lawrenceville, Ga.) each competed in the championship section of the Mile and came in second and sixth, respectively. Schappert ran a strong race from start to finish and crossed the finish line in 4:39.45 to eclipse her previous top mark by nearly four seconds. Akande registered a time of 4:45.19.
In the championship section of the 200 meters junior Varonica Johnson (Charlotte, N.C.) posted a time of 24.97 and finished in 27th place overall from a field of 69 competitors. Later in the afternoon Villanova competed in the college section of the 4x400 meter relay and came in 16th with a time of 3:52.31.
Sophomore Anne Yahiro (Downers Grove, Ill.) and senior Victoria Profit (Nissequogue, N.Y.) each competed in the college section of the triple jump. Yahiro placed 16th in a field of 50 athletes and Profit was close behind in 22nd place. They recorded marks of 11.71 meters and 11.46 meters, respectively.
Next weekend Wildcats senior Emily Lipari (Greenvale, N.Y.) will be competing in the Wanamaker Mile at the Millrose Games, which are also held at the Armory. Villanova will then be back at the New York venue two weeks from now (February 21-22) to compete in the BIG EAST Championships.
