NEW YORK - On the first day of competition at the Armory Collegiate Invitational on Friday afternoon Villanova competed in 11 events and had three personal best times recorded at the New York Armory. The two-day meet continues on Saturday morning and will have events throughout the day and early evening.
Among the events that the Wildcats participated in on Friday were the championship sections of four events. In the 1000 meters redshirt freshman Caitlin Bungo (Pittsburgh, Pa.) recorded a time of 2:59.56 in her first collegiate race in the event and tallied a 37th place overall finish.
Villanova also had athletes in the championship sections of three sprint events. Junior Varonica Johnson (Charlotte, N.C.) came in 35th in the preliminaries of the 60 meters with a time of 7.70 and classmate Emerald Walden (Lafayette Hill, Pa.) posted a time of 8.73 in the 60 meter hurdles to finish 32nd in the preliminary heats. Sophomore Michaela Wilkins (Ellicott City, Md.) ran in the preliminaries of the 400 meters and placed 38th with a time of 58.21.
Freshmen Kalissa Caesar (Port Jervis, N.Y.) and Veronica Scott (Plymouth, N.H.) established personal bests while competing in the college sections of the 60 meters and the 500 meters, respectively. Caesar broke eight seconds for the first time in the preliminaries of the 60 meters and came in 25th out of 69 competitors with a time of 7.88. Scott finished 26th in the 500 meters with a time of 1:17.67, while senior Mary Bohi (Shamong, N.J.) was 28th in 1:18.27.
In the college sections of the 60 meter hurdles and the 200 meters freshman Danielle Wheatley (Greenbelt, Md.) placed 29th (9.25) and tied for 25th (25.65), respectively. Fellow freshman Emma Biggs (Amherst, Mass.) also ran the 200 meters and finished 47th in the field of 86 runners with a time of 26.35.
Villanova had athletes competing in three field events on Friday afternoon, including a group of four in the college section of the pole vault. Sophomore Virginia LaMacchia (Bloomsburg, Pa.) tied for fourth place out of 22 competitors in the pole vault, while junior Kathleen McPhillips (Carlisle, Pa.) and sophomore Abigail Nolte (Branchburg, N.J.) came in sixth and 10th, respectively. All three cleared a height of 3.75 meters, while graduate student Bianca Reo (Parsippany, N.J.) tied for 18th place with a height of 3.50 meters.
Senior Samantha Yeats (Califon, N.J.) finished in sixth place in the college section of the high jump with a height of 1.69 meters and sophomore Anne Yahiro (Downers Grove, Ill.) was 30th out of 72 entries in the college section of the long jump (5.37 meters).
