Yeats Wins College Section of High Jump at New Balance Collegiate Invitational
Feb. 3, 2012
NEW YORK--Sophomore Samantha Yeats (Califon, N.J.) won the college section of the high jump and Villanova started off the New Balance Collegiate Invitational with the first of two days of competition on Friday at the New York Armory. Events will continue on Saturday morning and last throughout the day.
Yeats cleared a height of 1.78 meters and emerged as the winner from a field of 19 competitors in her section of the event. That height is a new career best for Yeats, who had cleared 1.75 meters as a freshman last season and consistently matched that effort since then.
There was plenty of success to go around for the Wildcats in the field events. Freshman Alexandra Wasik (Medina, Ohio) established her third personal best height of the season in the college section of the pole vault and came in fourth out of 41 athletes. She cleared 3.90 meters and now holds the top mark on the team this season. Fellow freshman Kathleen McPhillips (Carlisle, Pa.) tied for 14th place (3.70m) and senior Melissa Meggiolaro (Whippany, N.J.) cleared 3.60 meters to come in 25th.
In the running events Villanova had a group of athletes in the college section of the 500 meters. Freshman Faith Dismuke (Passaic, N.J.) finished in 12th place from a field of 61 competitors and crossed the finish line with a time of 1:15.57, just five-hundredths of a second off her season best mark. Freshman Leanne Tucker (Tewksbury, Mass.) placed 23rd (1:16.69), senior Erin Ryan (Doylestown, Pa.) was 30th (1:17.28) and sophomore Mary Bohi (Shamong, N.J.) came in 37th (1:17.98). The latter three runners each had season best times in their races.
Senior Christie Verdier (Baldwin, N.Y.) made her season debut in the championship section of the 400 meters and posted a time of 55.59, coming in 20th overall and finishing fourth in her individual heat. She met the postseason qualifying mark for both the BIG EAST Championships and the ECAC Championship with her time.
In the championship section of the 1000 meters junior Shannon Browne (Staten Island, N.Y.) ran a personal best time of 2:56.28 to finish 28th out of 60 runners and freshman Amanda Borroughs (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) finished in 33rd place with a time of 2:57.38.
Freshman Emerald Walden (Lafayette Hill, Pa.) competed in the preliminary heats of the 60 meter hurdles and finished fourth in her heat with a time of 8.75. Classmate Varonica Johnson (Charlotte, N.C.) ran a personal best time of 7.63 and tied for 40th place in the preliminaries of the 60 meter dash.
Villanova will be running in three relays this weekend and the first came on Friday night when the Wildcats finished fourth out of eight entries in the championship section of the distance medley relay. Villanova recorded a total time of 11:12.59 in the relay, which marked the Wildcats first DMR race of the season.
