Katherine Petruzzellis Finishes Third in Pentathlon on First Day of Penn State National
Katherine Petruzzellis qualified for the BIG EAST Championships and the ECAC Championship in the pentathlon with a terrific performance at the Penn State National on Friday afternoon.

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Sophomore Katherine Petruzzellis (Annandale, N.J.) came in third in the pentathlon to highlight four Villanova athletes that were in competition on Friday during the first day of competition at the Penn State National, which is being held on the Horace Ashenfelter III Indoor Track over two days this weekend.

Petruzzellis scored 3,577 points in the pentathlon and placed third out of six athletes in competition. Her score is a new career best and was backed by career best performances in two of the five events that made up the competition. She registered a time of 9.29 in the 60 meter hurdles and a distance of 5.15 meters in the long jump to establish new personal bests in both events.

In the other events of the pentathlon Petruzzellis was second in the field in the high jump (1.68 meters), shot put (10.87 meters) and 800 meters (2:28.74) to add to her point total. In her first full pentathlon of the season she produced a score which qualifies her for both the BIG EAST Championships as well as the ECAC Championship.

Sophomore sprinter Emerald Walden (Lafayette Hill, Pa.) turned in a career best performance in the 60 meter hurdles. She advanced through the preliminary heats and the semifinals to eventually place eighth in the final heat of the event, where she notched a personal best time of 8.51.

Walden came in second in her preliminary heat with a time of 8.70 in her first race of the night, which was good for 12th overall in a field of 30 competitors. In the semifinals she crossed the finish line in 8.63, ranking eighth out of 16 qualifiers for the semifinal round and fourth in her individual heat.

In the 60 meters sophomore Varonica Johnson (Charlotte, N.C.) reached the semifinal round and recorded a season best time of 7.64 to finish fourth in her heat and 10th overall in the semifinal heats. Earlier, she came in third in her preliminary heat with a time of 7.71 which was tied for 15th among 34 entries in the preliminary round.



Sophomore Megan Venables (Laurel Springs, N.J.) ran in the Invitational section of the 5000 meters and came in fourth in a field of 21 runners. In her first 5000 meters race of the season she crossed the finish line with a time of 17:22.38.

Action continues at Penn State on Saturday morning and will last throughout the day. The first event on tap for the Wildcats is the 400 meters at 10:30 a.m., while the team's final event of the day is the 4x400 meter relay at 5:50 p.m. A full recap of the day's action will be posted on Saturday night.
