NEW YORK - Senior Emily Lipari (Greenvale, N.Y.) and sophomore Angel Piccirillo (Homer City, Pa.) won the Mile and the 1000 meters, respectively, and Villanova continued the indoor season on a strong note with its performance at the Great Dane Classic on Friday night. The meet was the second of three straight at the New York Armory for the Wildcats, who picked up six top-three finishes on the day.
The majority of the Villanova distance runners were making their season debut in the meet. Lipari and junior teammate Stephanie Schappert (Delray Beach, Fla.) raced to a one-two finish in the Mile, with Lipari crossing the finish line with a winning time of 4:43.92. Schappert was right behind her in 4:44.60 and the next finisher was nearly nine seconds back in third place.
Piccirillo registered a time of 2:48.26 in the 1000 meters and won by more than a second over the runner-up from Albany. In addition to their individual races Lipari and Piccirillo also ran a leg on the Wildcats 4x400 meter relay entry. The relay team made up of Lipari, sophomore Michaela Wilkins (Ellicott City, Md.), Piccirillo and senior Nicky Akande (Lawrenceville, Ga.) posted a time of 3:51.21 and finished in sixth place out of 29 teams.
Two of the other top finishes for Villanova came from Akande and sophomore Kelsey Margey (Huntington, N.Y.) in the 800 meters. The pair finished second and third, respectively, in a field of 36 runners. Akande crossed the finish line second in 2:10.88, while Margey was third with a time of 2:11.48.
Junior sprinter Emerald Walden (Lafayette Hill, Pa.) had the other top-three finish for the Wildcats after running two races in the 60 meter hurdles. Walden ranked third out of 50 entries in the preliminary heats of the hurdles. She recorded a time of 8.76 in the preliminaries and lowered that mark to 8.71 to hold on to her third place standing in the finals.
In other results from the sprint events, junior Varonica Johnson (Charlotte, N.C.) took fifth place in the 200 meters (24.47) and freshman Veronica Scott (Plymouth, N.H.) was sixth in the 500 meters after crossing the finish line in 1:18.49.
A group of three Villanova athletes took part in the pole vault, with junior Kathleen McPhillips (Carlisle, Pa.) tying for fifth place by clearing a height of 3.60 meters. Sophomores Virginia LaMacchia (Bloomsburg, Pa.) and Abigail Nolte (Branchburg, N.J.) placed seventh (3.60m) and tied for 11th (3.45m), respectively.
Sophomore Anne Yahiro (Downers Grove, Ill.) finished seventh in the triple jump with a distance of 11.84 meters and senior Victoria Profit (Nissequogue, N.Y.) was 12th (11.57m). Sophomore Alita Ostapkovich (Bensalem, Pa.) came in ninth in the weight throw (13.75m).
Overall the Wildcats had 22 student-athletes competing in 13 different events at the Great Dane meet. Villanova amassed 82.5 points and finished second in the team scoring for the meet.
