UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.-- A number of strong individual and team performances highlighted the Villanova results this past weekend at the Penn State Relays. The first meet on the 2008 calendar was held on Saturday at the Horace Ashenfelter III Track.

The Wildcats ran had two entries each in the 1600, 3200 and distance medley relays. As a result the team now has the fastest time in the BIG EAST this season in all three events. In the 4x400 meter relay, the quartet of freshman Audrey Gariepy-Bogui (Potomac, Md.), sophomore Makalia Griffith (Haddon Twp., N.J.) and freshmen Kristen Mahon (Whitestone, N.Y.) and Jessona McDonald (Jackson, N.J.) finished second out of 10 entries with a time of 3:49.62. That mark is currently 3.5 seconds faster than the time posted by Georgetown earlier this season.

Villanova also placed second out of eight squads in the 4x800 meter relay with a time of 9:19.39. That race was run by freshmen Sarah Morrison (Chambersburg, Pa.), Alison Smith (Columbia, Md.) and Callie Hogan (Bayshore, N.Y.) and anchored by senior Akilah Vargas (Brooklyn, N.Y.).

In the distance medley relay, the Wildcat entry placed third out of 11 teams with a mark of 12:05.40. Smith was the leadoff runner and was followed by freshman Ashlyn Llerandi (Ridgewood, N.J.), Vargas and Hogan.

Griffith and Gariepy-Bogui also had the leading individual performances for Villanova. Griffith took first in the 500 meter dash with a time of 1:15.39 and owns the fourth-quickest time in that event in the BIG EAST this season. Her time on Saturday was just one second behind the leading conference time produced by a runner from Notre Dame.

Gariepy-Bogui finished second in the 55 meter hurdles with a time of 8.07 and also tied for fourth place out of 17 individuals with a mark of 1.70m (5'7") in the high jump. Llerandi placed second of 11 in the pole vault with a leap of 3.50m (11'5 ¾").
