Jan. 10, 2014
NEW YORK--Junior sprinter Emerald Walden (Lafayette Hill, Pa.) won the 60 meter hurdles by a comfortable margin and Villanova returned to action by competing in seven events at the Gotham Cup on Friday afternoon. The meet was the first of three straight at the New York Armory for the Wildcats and today's date marked the 100th anniversary to the day of the first track meet held at the famed New York venue. Villanova had 14 athletes in competition during the meet.
Walden recorded a winning time of 8.78 in the final heat of the 60 meter hurdles. She opened up the day by registering the fastest time in the preliminary heats of the event, where her mark of 8.80 paced a field of 39 competitors.
Junior sprinter Varonica Johnson (Charlotte, N.C.) ran in the 60 meters and was one of eight runners in the field of 75 to advance to the final. She crossed the finish line in 7.72 in the preliminaries to rank fifth overall and then held that spot with a fifth place finish and a time of 7.70 in the final.
The other sprint event Villanova competed in on Friday was the 500 meters, with sophomore Michaela Wilkins (Ellicott City, Md.) pacing three Wildcats with a sixth place finish (1:15.68). Freshman Veronica Scott (Plymouth, N.H.) and senior Mary Bohi (Shamong, N.J.) came in 12th (1:18.31) and 15th (1:18.59), respectively. The time for Scott surpassed her mark of 1:18.95 set in her collegiate debut at the Jack Pyrah Invitational last month.
Villanova ran in the 4x400 meter relay and finished in fifth place with a time of 3:59.28.
Three field events rounded out the meet for the Wildcats, highlighted by the pole vault. Villanova had the top four finishers out of 18 athletes in the event, with sophomore Virginia LaMacchia (Bloomsburg, Pa.) and junior Kathleen McPhillips (Carlisle, Pa.) each clearing a height of 3.75 meters to finish first and second, respectively. Graduate student Bianca Reo (Parsippany, N.J.) and junior Alexandra Wasik (Medina, Ohio) tied for third place (3.65m) and sophomore Abigail Nolte (Branchburg, N.J.) came in eighth (3.40m).
