Monique Morgan Named to Jamaica Olympic Team
Another former Villanova great has earned a nomination to the 2016 Summer Olympics, as sprinter Monique Morgan was named to the Jamaica’s Olympic Team in a press release earlier this week. Morgan, who competes in the 100 meter hurdles, was one of 63 athletes nominated to the country’s squad for the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil next month. Morgan, a 2007 graduate who has also been a Wildcats volunteer assistant coach, is headed to the Olympics for the first time.

Starting in late March when 2015 graduate Sam McEntee won the 5000 meters at the Australian Athletics Championships, current and former members of the Villanova track & field program have been making headlines around the world at Olympic Trials and other elite international competitions.
Cleirigh Buttner and Yahiro Earn Academic All-Area Honors
Sophomore middle distance runner Siofra Cleirigh Buttner (Dublin, Ireland) and senior field athlete Anne Yahiro (Downers Grove, Ill.) were each named to the Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Team in an announcement made on Friday morning. The team is voted on by the sports information directors of the Philadelphia area colleges and universities, and takes into account a student-athlete’s accomplishments in competition as well as academically.
Siofra Cleirigh Buttner Earns Second Team All-America Honors in 800 Meters
The list of All-Americans for the outdoor track & field season was announced on Monday afternoon by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) and Villanova sophomore Siofra Cleirigh Buttner (Dublin, Ireland) was a second team selection in the 800 meters. Cleirigh Buttner competed at the outdoor NCAA Championships for the first time in her career to put a cap on an impressive year of competition.
Siofra Cleirigh Buttner Concludes Strong Season at NCAA Championships
Sophomore middle distance runner Siofra Cleirigh Buttner (Dublin, Ireland) made her first career appearance at the outdoor NCAA Championships and came in 10th overall in the semifinal heats of the 800 meters at Hayward Field on Thursday evening. Cleirigh Buttner came in fourth in her heat with a time of 2:04.72 to wrap up an impressive sophomore campaign. She was the first Villanova runner since 2008 to compete at the outdoor national championships in the 800 meters.
Grant and Burda Wrap Up Competition for Wildcats at NCAA East Preliminary
On the final night of competition at the NCAA East Preliminary, senior sprinter Shanice Grant (Kingston, Jamaica) and freshman distance runner Bella Burda (Pleasant Valley, N.Y.) represented Villanova in the 100 meter hurdles and the 5000 meters, respectively. Grant finished 18th in the national quarterfinal heats of the hurdles at Hodges Stadium on Saturday evening and Burda placed 22nd in the semifinal heats of the 5000 meters.

Cleirigh Buttner is an automatic qualifier in the 800 meters after finishing second in her national quarterfinal heat at Hodges Stadium on Friday night. Also in action for the Wildcats on the second night of competition at the NCAA East Preliminary was senior sprinter Shanice Grant (Kingston, Jamaica), who advanced to the quarterfinal heats on the 100 meter hurdles.

Sophomore middle distance runner Siofra Cleirigh Buttner (Dublin, Ireland) won her national first round heat of the 800 meters at the NCAA East Preliminary and automatically qualified for the quarterfinals during competition at Hodges Stadium on Thursday night. Villanova had two runners in competition on the first night of the regional meet, with freshman Sammy Bockoven (Hudson, Ohio) also in action in the first round of the 1500 meters.
