Siofra Cleirigh Buttner is Athletics Ireland U23 Athlete of the Year
Junior track & field and cross country runner Siofra Cleirigh Buttner (Dublin, Ireland) was recognized on Wednesday as the Athletics Ireland U23 Athlete of the Year. An awards ceremony was held at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Northwood in Dublin where the country’s top athletics performers during the past year were recognized. Cleirigh Buttner had earlier been selected as one of three finalists for the U23 Athlete of the Year honor.
Wildcats Legend Marty Stern to be Inducted to Coaches Hall of Fame
Legendary Villanova track & field coach Marty Stern, who guided the Wildcats women’s cross country team to five straight national titles among his long list of accomplishments, was named on Wednesday afternoon as one of six coaches who will be inducted into the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Coaches Hall of Fame as the Class of 2016.
Bella Burda Places 16th in 5000 Meters at World U20 Championships
Rising sophomore Bella Burda (Pleasant Valley, N.Y.) competed in the 5000 meters at the IAAF World U20 Championships on Saturday morning and registered a 16th place finish at Stadion Zawisza in Bydgoszcz, Poland. Burda recorded a time of 16:43.87 in the race to cap off what has been a terrific summer season.
Nicole Hutchinson Lowers PR in 1500 at World U20 Championships
Rising sophomore Nicole Hutchinson (West Vancouver, B.C.) continued her terrific summer season with another personal best in the 1500 meters on Friday morning at the World U20 Championships. In the preliminary heats of the event, Hutchinson crossed the finish line in 4:22.88 at Stadion Zawisza and finished seventh in her heat.
Monique Morgan Named to Jamaica Olympic Team
Another former Villanova great has earned a nomination to the 2016 Summer Olympics, as sprinter Monique Morgan was named to the Jamaica’s Olympic Team in a press release earlier this week. Morgan, who competes in the 100 meter hurdles, was one of 63 athletes nominated to the country’s squad for the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil next month. Morgan, a 2007 graduate who has also been a Wildcats volunteer assistant coach, is headed to the Olympics for the first time.

The summer season is always a busy one for the Wildcats track & field athletes, but never more so than in an Olympic year. Starting in late March when 2015 graduate Sam McEntee won the 5000 meters at the Australian Athletics Championships, current and former members of the Villanova track & field program have been making headlines around the world at Olympic Trials and other elite international competitions.
Cleirigh Buttner and Yahiro Earn Academic All-Area Honors
Sophomore middle distance runner Siofra Cleirigh Buttner (Dublin, Ireland) and senior field athlete Anne Yahiro (Downers Grove, Ill.) were each named to the Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Team in an announcement made on Friday morning. The team is voted on by the sports information directors of the Philadelphia area colleges and universities, and takes into account a student-athlete’s accomplishments in competition as well as academically.
Siofra Cleirigh Buttner Earns Second Team All-America Honors in 800 Meters
The list of All-Americans for the outdoor track & field season was announced on Monday afternoon by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) and Villanova sophomore Siofra Cleirigh Buttner (Dublin, Ireland) was a second team selection in the 800 meters. Cleirigh Buttner competed at the outdoor NCAA Championships for the first time in her career to put a cap on an impressive year of competition.
