Grant, Yahiro and Hamilton Tally First Place Finishes at Princeton Outdoor Invite
Seniors Shanice Grant (Kingston, Jamaica) and Anne Yahiro (Downers Grove, Ill.), and junior Caroline Hamilton (Nottingham, Pa.) all won their respective events during competition in the Princeton Outdoor Invite at Weaver Stadium on Saturday afternoon. Villanova came in fourth in the team standings at the meet and scored in a total of 11 different events overall.
Three Wildcats Wrap Up Competition in Heptathlon on Friday Afternoon
The final three events of the heptathlon were contested during the Princeton Outdoor Invite on Friday afternoon. Freshman Sofia Calabrese (Edwards, Colo.) had the top result out of three Villanova athletes who competed over two days at Weaver Stadium, as she tallied a sixth place overall finish out of 13 competitors. Calabrese scored 3,778 points overall, while freshman Niki Cleary (Flemington, N.J.) came in ninth (3,334 points) and sophomore Marley Byrne (Auburn, Maine) was 10th (3,259).
Young Villanova Runners Have Success at Hurricane Alumni Invitational
Several of the younger members of the Villanova roster turned in strong performances on Saturday afternoon at the Hurricane Alumni Invitational, where the Wildcats had athletes competing in eight different events at Cobb Stadium. Freshman middle distance runner Sammy Bockoven (Hudson, Ohio) established a new personal best time in the 800 meters of the second straight week and led a group of three Villanova runners who placed in the top six of the event.
Wildcats Compete in Four Events on First Day of Sam Howell Invitational
Junior thrower Caroline Hamilton (Nottingham, Pa.) led a field of 11 competitors in the javelin and Villanova began the weekend by competing in four events at the Sam Howell Invitational on Friday afternoon. The day's action included three throwing events and one running event.
Wildcats Pick Up Pair of Second Place Finishes at Colonial Relays
Villanova wrapped up competition at the Colonial Relays on Saturday afternoon and came away with a sixth place team finish at the three-day meet. Highlighting the action at Zable Stadium as the meet concluded were a pair of second place finishes for the Wildcats, who scored a total of 56 points during the meet.
Ekiah Lewis Soars Into Third Place in School History in Long Jump at Colonial Relays
Junior Ekiah Lewis (San Bernardino, Calif.) registered a personal best mark in the long jump for the second straight week and moved up to third place on the all-time Villanova performance list in the event with a terrific effort at the Colonial Relays on Friday afternoon. She recorded a distance of 5.72 meters on her best jump and highlighted a number of strong performances for the Wildcats on the first full day of action at Zable Stadium.
Wildcats Capture Four Individual Events at Penn Challenge
In its first meet of the 2016 outdoor track & field season, Villanova recorded a number of strong performances at the Penn Challenge on Saturday afternoon. The team's success at Franklin Field on a cool and blustery day included four individual event winners and more than a dozen new personal best times and marks. Senior jumper Anne Yahiro (Downers Grove, Ill.) was a double winner for the Wildcats in the long jump and the triple jump, while junior Veronica Scott (Plymouth, N.H.) captured the 400 meters and freshman Sammy Bockoven (Hudson, Ohio) won the 800 meters.
Angel Piccirillo Earns First Team All-America Honors in the Mile
Middle distance runners Angel Piccirillo (Homer City, Pa.) and Siofra Cleirigh Buttner (Dublin, Ireland) combined for a total of three All-America honors on Monday afternoon in an announcement by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). A senior, Piccirillo earned first team All-America accolades in the Mile and second team honors in the 3000 meters, while the sophomore Cleirigh Buttner is a second team All-American in the 800 meters. They each represented Villanova at the NCAA Championships this past weekend.
