In the national semifinal heats of the 1500 meters, a steady race from start to finish was a successful formula for senior Stephanie Schappert (Delray Beach, Fla.) and she was an automatic qualifier for the final at the NCAA Championships thanks to a third place finish in her heat. Schappert and junior Angel Piccirillo (Homer City, Pa.) competed in the second of two semifinal heats at Hayward Field on Thursday afternoon, where they recorded times of 4:17.31 and 4:19.13, respectively. Piccirillo finished sixth in the heat.

Both runners competed in the first quarterfinal heat and were among the 12 competitors who advanced through to the national meet in Oregon next month. Senior Katherine Petruzzellis (Annandale, N.J.) also competed in the high jump at Hodges Stadium on Saturday night and wound up finishing 30th overall.

Freshman Siofra Cleirigh Buttner (Dublin, Ireland) ran a collegiate best time in the 800 meters on the second night of competition at the NCAA East Preliminary, where Villanova had three athletes in competition on Friday evening. Also competing at Hodges Stadium for the Wildcats were senior Varonica Johnson (Charlotte, N.C.) in the 200 meters and junior Shanice Grant (Kingston, Jamaica) in the 100 meter hurdles.

Senior women's track & field athletes Stephanie Schappert (Delray Beach, Fla.) and Alexandra Wasik (Medina, Ohio) have each been named to the Capital One Academic All-District team in District 2, as announced late last week. Both student-athletes will now move on to the national ballot and be considered for Academic All-America status. They are each set to begin competition at the NCAA East Preliminary later this week.
