Women’s Track & Field Closes Strong at Colonial Relays
Villanova finished in the top four of both relay races it entered on the final day of the 52nd annual Berkley Realty Colonial Relays and the Wildcats wound up finishing in eighth place out of 45 teams at the three-day meet. Saturday’s action at Zable Stadium included the relay events and several field events.
Women’s Track & Field Posts Fast Times at Florida Relays
Several of the top performers on the Villanova roster were in competition on Friday as a group of five middle distance runners competed during the second day of the Pepsi Florida Relays at James G. Pressly Stadium. Senior Angel Piccirillo (Homer City, Pa.) and junior Siofra Cleirigh Buttner (Dublin, Ireland) led the Wildcats in the 1500 meters and the 800 meters, respectively. This is the first time since 2009 that Villanova has sent any of its athletes to the renowned Florida meet.
Veronica Scott Wins 400 Meter Hurdles at Colonial Relays
Senior sprinter Veronica Scott (Plymouth, N.H.) equaled the top time of her career in the 400 meter hurdles and emerged as the winner of the event at the 52nd annual Berkeley Realty Colonial Relays at Zable Stadium on Friday afternoon. Scott was one of 15 athletes in competition for Villanova on the second day of the meet. The day’s action yielded five top-eight results for the Wildcats.
Piccirillo Wins 800 and 1500 Meters at Penn Challenge
In her first official race for Villanova since the cross country national championships last fall, senior Angel Piccirillo (Homer City, Pa.) won both the 800 meters and the 1500 meters at the Penn Challenge on Saturday afternoon. In the first meet of the outdoor season, the Wildcats tallied a total of nine top-three finishes at Franklin Field.
Siofra Cleirigh Buttner Leads Wildcats All-America Selections
Junior middle distance runner Siofa Cleirigh Buttner (Dublin, Ireland) was named a first team All-American by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) on Monday afternoon. Cleirigh Buttner highlighted a total of six All-America honors for Villanova, which had two individual athletes and one relay team in action at the NCAA Championships last week.
Cleirigh Buttner Places Eighth in Mile at National Championships
Junior middle distance runner Siofra Cleirigh Buttner (Dublin, Ireland) finished eighth in the final of the Mile at the NCAA Championships on Saturday evening, continuing Villanova’s historical success at the national meet in both the Mile specifically and in extending the team’s streak of scoring points in the team standings. This is the fourth straight year that the Wildcats have had a runner finish in the top eight of the mile at the national championships, and it is also the ninth consecutive year in which Villanova has scored team points at the NCAA meet.
Cleirigh Buttner Advances in Mile, DMR Places 12th at NCAA Meet
Junior middle distance runner Siofra Cleirigh Buttner (Dublin, Ireland) advanced on time to the final of the Mile on the first night of the NCAA Championships on Friday evening. Cleirigh Buttner posted a time of 4:35.79 in the first of two preliminary heats at Gilliam Indoor Stadium on the Texas A&M campus to punch her ticket for Saturday night's final. Also on Friday night, the Villanova distance medley relay squad tallied a 12th place finish with a time of 11:13.59.
Cleirigh Buttner, Hutchinson and DMR Squad Earn NCAA Bids
Middle distance runners Siofra Cleirigh Buttner (Dublin, Ireland) and Nicole Hutchinson (West Vancouver, B.C.) are each among the 16 qualifiers in the Mile for the NCAA Championships next week, and the Villanova distance medley relay squad also earned a bid to the national meet in an announcement made late Tuesday night. The 2017 NCAA Division I Men’s and Women’s Indoor Track and Field Championships will take place on March 10-11 at Gilliam Indoor Stadium in College Station, Texas.
