Women's DMR, Adeline Scelzi the Big Winners on First Day at BIG EAST Championships
Sophomore multi-event athlete Sofia Calabrese (Edwards, Colo.) parlayed a personal best effort in the high jump to a third place finish in the pentathlon on the first day of the BIG EAST Championships on Friday afternoon. Calabrese cleared a height of 1.69 meters in the high jump to create some momentum in the second pentathlon event. She finished with 3,195 points at Ocean Breeze Track & Field Athletic Complex, while sophomore Niki Cleary (Flemington, N.J.) was eighth with a score of 2,915 points.
Women's Track & Field Ready to Continue Surge at BIG EAST Championships
An up-and-coming Villanova team is ready to measure the progress it has made this season at the BIG EAST Championships, which will be held at the Ocean Breeze Track & Field Athletic Complex in Staten Island, N.Y. on Friday and Saturday afternoons. The competition runs from approximately 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Friday, and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday. All of the action can be seen live on BIG EAST Digital Network via the Fox Sports GO app both days. Nicole Hutchinson Lowers Personal Best in Mile at UCS Invitational
Sophomore middle distance runner Nicole Hutchinson (West Vancouver, B.C.) lowered her personal best time in the Mile in a terrific race at the UCS Invitational on Saturday evening. Hutchinson registered a time of 4:36.16 in her race, and the mark will be further lowered once it is converted to account for being run on a flat 200-meter track. Hutchinson was the lone women’s athlete competing for the Villanova in Saturday’s meet at the JDL Fast Track.
Cleirigh Buttner Clocked in 4:33.16, Leads National List in Mile
In the first Mile race of her career, junior middle distance runner Siofra Cleirigh Buttner (Dublin, Ireland) turned in a remarkable performance and posted a time of 4:33.16 during the FastTrack National Invitational at Ocean Breeze Track & Field Complex on Friday afternoon. Her incredible race was part of an extremely successful day for Villanova, which received strong efforts across the board in a highly competitive meet. Two of the most noteworthy results of the day came in the Mile, as Cleirigh Buttner was joined by sophomore Sammy Bockoven (Hudson, Ohio) who recorded a time of 4:38.27 and lowered her previous personal best by nearly 10 seconds.
Hutchinson Wins 3000 Meters at Villanova Invitational
Sophomore distance runner Nicole Hutchinson (West Vancouver, B.C.) joined both the national leaders for the current indoor season as well as the all-time Villanova leaders in the 3000 meters with a time of 9:09.59 at the Ocean Breeze Track & Field Athletic Complex on Saturday night. Hutchinson highlighted the Villanova Invitational with a big win in the 3000 meters, and the Wildcats registered a number of strong finishes during their final home meet of the season.
Siofra Cleirigh Buttner Named BIG EAST Athlete of the Week
Junior middle distance runner Siofra Cleirigh Buttner (Dublin, Ireland) was named the BIG EAST Women’s Track Athlete of the Week on Tuesday afternoon. The announcement came after a pair of performances over the weekend in which Cleirigh Buttner set an indoor school record in the 800 meters and anchored a distance medley relay to a time that ranks among the national leaders this season.

The second day of the Columbia East-West Challenge was a record-setting one for Villanova, as junior middle distance runner Siofra Cleirigh Buttner (Dublin, Ireland) broke her own indoor school record in the 800 meters at the New York Armory on Saturday evening. Cleirigh Buttner starred in the 800 meters and sophomore Nicole Hutchinson (West Vancouver, B.C.) finished as the runner-up in the Mile to lead a group of Wildcats that ran in that race.
