The list of All-Americans for the outdoor track & field season was announced on Monday afternoon by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) and Villanova sophomore Siofra Cleirigh Buttner (Dublin, Ireland) was a second team selection in the 800 meters. Cleirigh Buttner competed at the outdoor NCAA Championships for the first time in her career to put a cap on an impressive year of competition.
Siofra Cleirigh Buttner Concludes Strong Season at NCAA Championships
Sophomore middle distance runner Siofra Cleirigh Buttner (Dublin, Ireland) made her first career appearance at the outdoor NCAA Championships and came in 10th overall in the semifinal heats of the 800 meters at Hayward Field on Thursday evening. Cleirigh Buttner came in fourth in her heat with a time of 2:04.72 to wrap up an impressive sophomore campaign. She was the first Villanova runner since 2008 to compete at the outdoor national championships in the 800 meters.
Grant and Burda Wrap Up Competition for Wildcats at NCAA East Preliminary
On the final night of competition at the NCAA East Preliminary, senior sprinter Shanice Grant (Kingston, Jamaica) and freshman distance runner Bella Burda (Pleasant Valley, N.Y.) represented Villanova in the 100 meter hurdles and the 5000 meters, respectively. Grant finished 18th in the national quarterfinal heats of the hurdles at Hodges Stadium on Saturday evening and Burda placed 22nd in the semifinal heats of the 5000 meters.

Also in action for the Wildcats on the second night of competition at the NCAA East Preliminary was senior sprinter Shanice Grant (Kingston, Jamaica), who advanced to the quarterfinal heats on the 100 meter hurdles.

Sophomore middle distance runner Siofra Cleirigh Buttner (Dublin, Ireland) won her national first round heat of the 800 meters at the NCAA East Preliminary and automatically qualified for the quarterfinals during competition at Hodges Stadium on Thursday night. Villanova had two runners in competition on the first night of the regional meet, with freshman Sammy Bockoven (Hudson, Ohio) also in action in the first round of the 1500 meters.

Sophomore middle distance runner Siofra Cleirigh Buttner (Dublin, Ireland) will represent Villanova at this week’s NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships as a qualifier in the 800 meters. This is the first time that Cleirigh Buttner will compete at the national meet outdoors. The championships are being held from Wednesday through Saturday and the meet returns to Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore. for the fourth straight year.
Women's Track & Field Qualifies Four for NCAA East Preliminary
The accepted entries for the NCAA East Preliminary were revealed on Thursday afternoon and Villanova has four women’s track & field athletes headed to Jacksonville, Fla. to compete in the early rounds of the national championships next week. This is the third straight year that the East Preliminary meet will head to Hodges Stadium on the University of North Florida campus. The meet takes place next Thursday through Saturday, May 26-28.
Women’s Track & Field Finishes Second at BIG EAST Championships
Four different athletes won individual events and Villanova had an impressive second place finish in the team standings as the BIG EAST Championships wrapped up at the SPIRE Institute on Saturday afternoon. In a close team race for the top three spots, the Wildcats had 179 points and beat out St. John’s by three points to hang on to second place. There were only 20 points separating Marquette, Villanova and the Red Storm in the team race.
