Women's Track & Field at Penn Relays (Apr. 26, 2018)

Villanova opened up competition at the Penn Relays with a busy schedule of events on April 26, 2018.

On McNelis: Newcomer to the Villanova pole vault group who had a highly successful scholastic career as a track & field athlete and a gymnast ... Possesses a wealth of potential in the pole vault and has the ability to make an immediate impact for the Wildcats this season ... Should continue to grow with collegiate experience.

2017-18 Indoor: Earned All-BIG EAST honors in the pole vault with a runner-up finish at the BIG EAST Championships ... Cleared the bar at a season-best height of 3.75 meters at the conference meet to finish in second place ... Competed in the pole vault a total of six times during the season ... Made her collegiate debut at the Jack Pyrah Invitational, finishing in fourth place and recording a height of 3.50 meters ... Cleared 3.60 meters and tied for sixth place in the invitational section at the FastTrack National Invite ... Had a height of 3.55 meters and placed fourth at the Villanova Invitational ... Recorded a successful attempt at 3.50 meters to finish 12th in the college section at the Columbia Challenge, and was 10th at the Nittany Lion Challenge with a height of 3.37 meters.

Commack High School: Earned eight varsity letters in track & field and four in gymnastics ... Also participated in six years of competitive gymnastics prior to high school ... Was the track & field team's Rookie of the Year as a freshman, then was named team MVP as a sophomore, junior and senior ... As a senior was named the Long Island USATF Female Athlete of the Year ... Also was chosen as the Suffolk County Coaches Association Outstanding Athlete for the outdoor season her senior year, and was her school's Female Athlete of the Year ... Four-time winner of the Board of Ed Athletic Achievement Award and the Scholar-Athlete Award ... Three-time all-state and all-federation performer ... Was an All-Long Island selection as a junior, and was also a four-time all-league, all-division and all-county honoree ... As a senior was the state runner-up in the pole vault both indoors and outdoors ... Competed at the Millrose Games her junior and senior years ... Four-time all-league, all-division, all-county, all-state and all-federation performer in gymnastics ... Inducted into the National Honor Society ... Also was a member of the honor societies for Math, Science, English, History and Spanish ... As a senior was the News 12 Long Island Scholar-Athlete Award winner ... Personal: Born 9/8/99 in Commack, N.Y. ... Older of two children of Patrick and Christine McNelis ... Has a younger brother, Patrick (15) ... Father was a track & field athlete at Georgetown and competed in the middle distance events ... Also has two uncles who were collegiate track & field athletes, one at Georgetown and one at Notre Dame ... Hobbies include water skiing, snow skiing and hiking ... Volunteers for Rolling Thunder, a program that helps train kids with disabilities in track & field ... Chose to attend Villanova for the reputation of the Villanova School of Business, and especially the alumni connections that the school offered ... Also noted the school's overall academic standing, the success of the athletics program and the warm campus community with a focus on community service ...
